The long-awaited event announcement by one of the biggest tech giants around finally happened.
For Samsung on 9 February 2022 (11PM MYT), several series and big announcements were unveiled: The Samsung Galaxy S22 series + 'return' of the Galaxy Note series and very interesting updates on the Galaxy S8 Tab series (our favourite!).
To welcome Samsung Unpacked 2022, we've joined hands with our guest star, local tech Youtuber - Adam Lobo, for a Watch Party + Giveaway. (PS: There's another giveaway to join below!)
Here's how our Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Livestream & Giveaway went:
Opening Speech
The event started with a touching speech by TM Roh, Head of Samsung Mobile, about Samsung's focus on the future. With regards to the pandemic that changed the way we live, it has made us all more conscious about sustaining a better Earth.
To help shape the earth's sustainability and enable a better world for the younger generations, Samsung is now ready to go full speed for a greener planet, starting with its practices and philosophy when it comes to creating innovative products.
With that, they've made some big announcements tying to their Galaxy of The Planet vision; an ambitious and promising eco-vision made by Samsung in 2021. There's even a speech by the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (more details below) about their collaboration.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Series
Definitely something unexpected; Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S22 Series through an amusing 'Bridgerton'-inspired skit (watch our live stream to discover it!).
For your reference, the Galaxy S22 lineup is the Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra (flagship).
Colours:
Based on the iconic designs belonging to the Galaxy S series - "flat elegant profile with a balanced effect", the entire S22 series will be available in several cases with analogous colours. The material of the cases is Armour Aluminum (which happens to be UL-certified and is made with eco-conscious materials). Another great addition to the choice of the case material is that they help with heat dissipation.

Nightography:
We noticed that the introduction to Samsung's photography segment has a 'Night' setting, and that's in line with their Nightography concept. This is Samsung's collective advanced camera technology system to easily capture bright and well-detailed images in dark-lit settings.
To take the best Nightographs possible, the entire Galaxy S22 series have larger individual pixel sizes, larger sensors and advanced image processing. The system is further boosted by Samsung's Multi-Frame Processing whereby it utilises an AI that combines 20 captured images, picks out the best photos and rid of the blurry, grainy ones.
There's also AI Stereo Depth Map for Portrait modes now to identify and process thin objects (like a straw), bringing them forward together with the main subject in an image (which works at night too!).
Everything essentially creates the perfect 'Nightograph' that's as clear and sharp as day shots. And you definitely do not need 5 or 7 seconds to take the perfect night shot!
Aside from capabilities like Pro Mode which features RAW resolution, there's also Adaptive pixel technology, Pet Portraiture, Portrait AI Matting for more accurate portraiture and Auto-Framing.
Not forgetting; the S22 series' Nightography capabilities are extended to selected social media apps like Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok as well as for video-capturing.
Camera setup details include a 50MP quad set for the S22 & S22+ whereas it'd be a 108MP quad set for the S22 Ultra. Galaxy S22 series will feature the largest sensor ever with a 10MP telephoto lens.
The setup is also completed with the likes of HDR10+ and a 58% wider correction camera angle alongside enhanced video image stabilisation.
S Pen with Galaxy S22 Ultra:
Probably one of the biggest news yet; the S22 Ultra 'doubles' as a Galaxy Note smartphone which was a highly-coveted series in the smartphone industry. And no, you don't need to buy a separate S Pen.
Every Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will come with an in-built slot that houses the latest S Pen yet. Promising a 30% faster S Pen, this is achievable with the pen's 2.8ms latency, down from 9ms on previous Ultra generations!
According to Umar (our video editor) on his first hands-on impression, the S22 Ultra seems similar to the Galaxy Note, with operation, features and hand-feel very similar to the latter.
Display:
The Samsung S22 series comes with a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display supported by a Vision Booster algorithm. They will be one of the brightest and most advanced displays yet. HD10+ support is also embedded.
Galaxy S22 Ultra will come with a sizeable 6.8-inch display and a peak brightness at 1,750nits. For the S22+, the brightness is also set to be 1,750nits whereas it'd be 1300 nits (peak) for the S22. Display size-wise, the S22 is 6.1-inch and the S22+ is at 6.6-inch.
4nm Processing:
Samsung's Galaxy S22 series will feature a 4nm chipset which offers an increase in performance to the smartphone overall compared to the previous generation. From what we learned, it'll boost 5% for CPU, 30% for GPU and 73% for NPU. The chipset is also optimised to aid in temperature control especially when the Galaxy S22 series is in operation to its fullest potential.
S Pen + Galaxy Tab S8 Series
As mentioned, the S Pen, which boasts a 2.8ms latency response, will come with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. What we're also loving is the former's inclusion in the Galaxy Tab S8 series.
A favourite of the ProductNation team's; the segment highlighted the prowess and updates to the S Pen with the Galaxy S Tab 8. It's announced that the responsiveness and acuteness of the S Pen with the Tab S8 series is improved by 30%. It's truly set to push boundaries in the Android tablet market.
The biggest and most powerful Galaxy Tab to date is definitely the new Tab S8 Ultra. It boasts a very interesting display set: 14.6-inch Super AMOLED display, a 2960x1848px resolution and a 120Hz variable refresh rate.
Another interesting reveal is the fact that the Tab S8 series will feature a notch that will house a dual 12MP camera setup, sitting on slim 6.3mm display bezels.
We're excited to see the response on the tablet series as it seems it can rival actual traditional laptops. Besides the camera's wide sensors and ultrawide 120 field-of-view, the front cameras also support 4K video recordings. Completing its camera setup is the rear camera's: a 13MP main & a 6MP ultrawide shooter.
Open Eco-System & One UI
Samsung also touched on updates to their open eco-system concept and their One UI OS. Upgrades such as more seamless synchronisation across Samsung devices (and other branded ones) as well as high-end security fixes are implemented to offer a more comfortable Galaxy experience.
This year, the highlight for upgrades focuses on transparency regarding sensitive features like camera and microphone. Users will finally be able to customise sharing permissions for each and every mobile app.
In line with Galaxy For The Planet; Samsung is extending OS updates and support for its mobile products up to 4 generations!

Back to Samsung's eco mission; the vision serves as a reminder and inspiration for Samsung, leveraging on their global influence and reach, to invest their time into realising a global zero-waste mission. This roadmap of theirs is in line with the United Nation's (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.
Aside from aiming to divert waste from landfills, extend product life cycles as well as provide more energy-saving devices (starting with their chargers), Samsung Mobile is also now actively reducing plastic usage, choosing to start with repurposing discarded fishing nets.
After spending years collaborating with industry experts, Samsung has found the right recipe to create suitable and necessary mobile components made from discarded fishing nets for the Galaxy S22 series which will not only withstand time but also provide the right protection for the phone.
FYI - we learned that recyclable plastics are actually less hardy than when in their original state. It is why Samsung took years to figure out how to perfect durability on this matter.
Another pleasant announcement is that all units from the Galaxy S22 series will be shipped in 100% recyclable paper packaging.
The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event 2022 officially ended with a pledge by Samsung to rid the ocean of 50 tons of discarded fishing nets this year (2022). Following that is a closing clip that reveals the unpleasant sights and effects of discarded fishing nets harming ocean wildlife.
