"The Future of Clean": How Dyson Is Reminding Us Malaysians To Live Mindfully

The brand's vision is to simplify home cleaning. But whether it's worth the money is another question.

Every time someone says to take a risk, we don't mean to do the unimaginably stupid thing. Rather, we should take the insane risk for the right reasons, like Sir James Dyson.

Of course, we are talking about the founder of the high-tech, home product brand, built with innovation at its finest, in spite of the risk of failure.

Just recently, Dyson came out with four new home products which might launch in Malaysia. As much as we want to stay pragmatic in terms of budget and value, is everything that brands like Dyson are doing, necessary and worth it for us?

For context, our team was recently invited to Dyson's super secret facility, so we took every second to soak up the entirety, fibre being that makes up Dyson — information and innovation. Unfortunately, we can't share everything, but here's what we can.

The Difference Between Dyson & Many Other Brands

Dyson has been developing its own motor technology since 2004, having invested more than £350m to date into research, laboratories, specialist teams and manufacturing capabilities.

In fact, it's common for engineers at Dyson to spend years working on single products or the tech in them. So if you see a Dyson robot vacuum, for instance, chances are they’ve been developing it for quite a while before you get to hear about it.

This brings us to their first new product - the Dyson 360 Vis Nav. Yes, it is the first robot vacuum by Dyson, and we're not surprised to experience the tech behind it.

Traditionally, it has been well-received that a robot vacuum's biggest weakness is not really suction power, but rather when it comes to edge cleaning.

With that, the Dyson 360 Vis Nav has sensors to detect the edges of a room and redirect suction through a side actuator for precision edge cleaning. Its high-level processor thinks and adapts, capable of pinpointing its position to within 71mm.

It also has a 360-degree, vision system with a fish-eye hemispheric lens which remembers where it has been, sees where to clean, and is intelligent enough to create dust maps of your home.

Next up is Dyson’s quietest, most powerful purifier: The Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet. Designed specifically for large, open-plan spaces, the Dyson HEPA Big+Quiet purifier is engineered specifically for simplicity in shared, commercial spaces.

Another product by Dyson is the Gen5detect Cordless Vacuum. Having reviewed both the V12 and V15 and several other vacuum brands, we're pretty critical with vacuums.

The Dyson Gen5detectTM cordless vacuum apparently features fifth-generation Hyperdymium motor technology to deliver incredible, unmatched suction power, capable of capturing viruses from your home. Also, there's a new Fluffy Optic cleaner head with increased brightness, revealing twice the amount of microscopic dust.

Not forgetting, there's also Dyson’s first wet vacuum cleaner: The Dyson Submarine wet roller head. Available with the Dyson V12 Detect Slim Submarine vacuum, it delivers just the right amount of water to effectively remove spills, stains, and small debris from hard floors.

To achieve an optimum ‘clean floor’ finish without flooding your floor, the wet roller head has been engineered with an eight-point hydration system, using a pressurised chamber for even water distribution across the full width of the roller.

Dyson's Future of Clean - Do We Pay Any Attention?

TLDR; Dyson released:

  • a robot vacuum that has six times more suction power than other vacuums and can generate a dust map
  • an air purifier that is proven to purify an entire room without blowing wind into your face
  • a new cordless vacuum that can suck up even viruses
  • and a new electric wet vacuum cleaner head that can get rid of tough stains.

So what's the big deal with these new innovations? Should we Malaysians make do with what we have and not give much thought to the releases?

What We Learned From Dyson

At Dyson's super secret facility, we got to ask Dysons's specialists more intimate questions. One of our biggest questions was:

With the number of upcoming home brands chasing to get a slice of the pie by coming up with similar products for a much cheaper value, and with AI now set to take over the world, is Dyson worried about the scene?

Turns out, that is hardly a concern for Dyson. As shared, innovation is very important for Dyson. Part of their vision when designing these new products was to create products that we could trust to study our house, how much cleaning it needs and how we can clean better with less time.

Because of changed cleaning patterns by homeowners, whereby everyone is only cleaning by their own standards of 'clean', Dyson took the data as experience to create AI-powered products that would clean according to their "clean" standards.

In essence, we can have a set-and-forget setup when it comes to house chores, and we can carry on with our quality of life.

Remember how the new Dyson robot vacuum has a dust map feature? It's made to study which location in your home generates more dust. The robot vacuum essentially optimises this data to clean the area better. Also, many new Dyson cordless vacuums are fitted with a laser head to see hidden dust.

Fueled on the belief that people are now more tired out easily in the 20th century, Dyson has technically taken steps to address social issues with their products. Instead of buying multiple home cleaning products just because they are cheaper, why not save the hassle by buying one and enjoying the heavy-duty cleaning for an extended time?

Dear Malaysians, This is Our Chance

Truth be told, Malaysia is a country easily and highly influenced by trends from other countries such as the USA and South Korea. At worst, we fall into the "go big or go home" dream, where we slave ourselves into a hectic routine with no work-life balance, which is a common take on life in many major cities.

But at best, Malaysians can learn from the bigger cities' mistakes, and create more unique, ideal societal expectations where we can adapt and work well in this fast-paced world.

We won't lie; having a high-tech brand trying to make their way into our lives can be scary, what with our high dependency on technology too (hey, remember the traditional mop, broom and dustpan?).

But brands like Dyson are reminding us to be at present with how fast the world is changing, and we should do all we can to adapt well so we don't have to suffer in our hectic, capitalist world. Long ago, it was possible for our middle-income parents and grandparents to look after the house while having a decent home life. Well, that's hardly possible now.

These days, it'd be better to save our energy and just embrace the technology brands like Dyson give us in order to enjoy our quiet time here on earth. Of course, it's up to you if you want to save your time by spending money or save your money by spending time.
