As part of their commitment towards to create a cleaner economy with environmentally-conscious materials in product design and packaging, the future is brighter thanks to the use of a variety of recycled plastics, bioplastics, and sustainable materials in Samsung products.
Samsung Mobile has been working toward its "Galaxy for the Planet" vision since it first expressed its sustainability goals two years ago, with the aim of reaching net zero by 2030. With the release of the new flagship Galaxy S23, Samsung has redoubled its efforts to integrate sustainability into its product development process. This effort can be traced back to the company's recently reorganised Samsung Mobile eXperience (DX) division, which has set aggressive targets to increase product energy efficiency by 30% by 2030, transition to 100% renewable energy by 2027, and eliminate standby power consumption in smartphone chargers by 2025.
Since 2009, Samsung has reused over 276,000 tons of recycled plastics globally in products and is on track to double that number by 2030. Won-Joon Choi, EVP, Head of Research & Development Office at Samsung Mobile eXperience expressed that Samsung is working towards "building the devices so that people do not need to choose or sacrifice the things they love to become more environmentally conscious".
The Galaxy S23 series, with its innovative new look, is a grand example of premium quality and cutting-edge technology. The flagship series will be reliable for years to come due to its sturdy construction and ease of repair. The Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, featured for the first time in a Galaxy device, has allowed the Galaxy S23 Series to offer durability for long-term use and an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled content.
Samsung used PET film made from 80% recycled PET for the device's back, and the packaging for Galaxy S23 models has been rethought from the ground up to feature paper that is 100% recycled and certified to be sourced sustainably.
Conversely, Samsung is taking additional measures across the product lifecycle to improve the sustainability of its smartphones, including increased durability and product longevity via software and security updates. In the United States, Samsung and iFixit have launched a self-repair programme to aid customers with some of the most common problems with their devices. With its recent launch, the Galaxy S23 will soon join the S20, S21, and S22 as devices supported by the kit. Users who wish to fix their own devices can do so by purchasing original Samsung components and simple repair tools from iFixit or any of Samsung's authorised service providers. After finishing the repair, customers can send the old components back to the manufacturer using the prepaid label.
