Some of the most stunning photography you can get often happens when the lights are down and the stars are out. Taking night portraits with a smartphone can be a bit challenging due to the smaller sensor size and limited manual control compared to DSLR or mirrorless cameras. However, with the right techniques and a bit of practice, you can still achieve great results.

How To Capture The Best Night Portraits on Your Smartphone
We may be writing a whole article guide for this, but taking Night Portraits on your smartphone, especially on the newest Galaxy S23 Ultra, is as easy as just snapping any regular photo in bright daylight.
- Open your Camera app
- Scroll over to More, and select Night Mode
- Frame your photo and snap — you may need to hold your phone steady for a couple of seconds as the sensor works its magic!
That is literally it, but we’ve also got some tips for you to make sure you get failproof Night Portraits every time.
Composition and Lighting
Like all other photography, composition and lighting is key to creating a balanced photo that brings out your subject. For portrait photography, enable the grid feature in your smartphone to ensure that your subject is in the optimal position.
Even in night photography, light plays a very important part. Of course, there may not be as much light as you'd have in regular daylight photography, but you can still use available light sources like street lamps, storefront lights, or even the stars and the moon to illuminate your subject — or even better, create dramatic shadows for the perfect night shot.
Use Night Mode
Most smartphones have an integrated Night Mode in their cameras, which is a camera feature designed to enhance photo quality in low-light conditions. For the most part, Night Mode combines multiple images to create one “super photo” that captures more light with reduced noise and grain.
Samsung has pretty much perfected night photography with the introduction of Nightography in the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This year, along with the massive 200MP camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, you’ll be able to take your Night Portraits one step further. Just take a look at these examples:

These photos are part of Samsung’s exclusive series celebrating the creativity and joy of people who don’t work conventional hours. And from these stunning images, the message is loud and clear.
During low light conditions, most smartphones struggle to capture clear and detailed images with minimal noise and grain, as the cameras just do not have large enough sensors to take in enough light.
That changed with Samsung’s famed Nightography, first introduced with last year’s Galaxy S22 Ultra. This year, Samsung has taken it to another level by including a 200MP main camera and employing powerful AI to ensure everyone can get the most vivid and detailed photos, even in the dark.
That said, Nightography doesn’t stop at just night scenery or astrophotography. For a more personal touch, document your nightlife with Night Portraits!
