OPPO Find N2 Flip Review Malaysia

Review: OPPO Find N2 Flip — There's The Good, And Then There's The Performance

Featuring The Cover Screen You Never Knew You Needed

We’ve been seeing foldable smartphones for a while now. Though they started out as a gimmick, foldable smartphones, clamshell or book style, have only gotten better with time. The most recent instalment in the world of foldable smartphones is the OPPO Find N2 Flip, and honestly, it’s probably the best foldable smartphone I’ve used in a while.

I did a quick mini review on the OPPO Find N2 Flip previously after spending only a day with it. Now that I’ve had it for a little longer, I have more Opinions, and here they are.

Display & Design

Once again, I have to comment on the beautiful purple shade on our Moonlit Purple review model. If you haven’t picked up on it yet, purple is my favourite colour — but if purple is not your thing, the Find N2 Flip also comes in Astral Black, which is a boring sensible colour for those who prefer less bling. The glossy finishing is unfortunately quite prone to fingerprints, though.

The OPPO Find N2 Flip folds horizontally into a compact square. There is no gap between the screens when folded, which is something that already sets it apart from its competitors on the market. Without a gap, it’s less likely for foreign objects to slip between the screens and potentially cause damage to the screen and hinge.

The Cover Screen is also the largest in any clamshell foldable, which is something I’d file under “Things I Never Knew I Needed”. While the functions on the 3.26” AMOLED is pretty much the same as other foldables — check notifications, toggle settings, take selfies — it’s surprising how much better a bigger screen makes all the difference.

My only complaint about the Cover Screen is the fact that we can’t do more — if it weren’t limited to just six widgets, I’d definitely be using it more like a regular phone screen. Scrolling on social media, for example.

Another “first of its kind” in the OPPO Find N2 Flip is the crease on the Main Screen when unfolded — or rather, the absence of it. The crease is really invisible when you look at the main screen straight on and barely visible at an angle; you can still feel it if you run your finger across the middle, but for the most part, it’s easy to forget that this is a foldable phone when you’re using the Main Screen.

The no-gap, no-crease look is made possible by the Flexion Hinge, which first debuted in the horizontal-folded OPPO Find N2. According to OPPO, it’s smaller, lighter, and thinner, yet stronger, able to withstand up to 216,000 folds and unfolds. I did not have the time or the chance to actually try and break the phone in this way; give it a year or two, and we’ll see. As it were, flipping the phone multiple times is a pretty smooth operation, albeit a little light, and not the inconvenience one would expect from a foldable.

Camera

Like all foldables, the OPPO Find N2 Flip can take selfies in all manner of angles since it can stand on its own without a tripod. The bigger Cover Screen, as I’ve noted in the First Impression, makes Cover Screen selfies and photo previews much more pleasant to use, as you can now actually see how your photos turn out without having to squint at a tiny screen.

The Find N2 Flip employs a dual rear camera system comprising a 50MP wide-angle camera and an 8MP ultra-wide camera, and a 32MP Sony IMX709 RGBW sensor under-display camera on the Main Screen. For image processing, it comes with the traditional OPPO MariSilicon X Imaging NPU, seen on pretty much all of the brand’s smartphones.

At the very least, the OPPO Find N2 Flip lives up to OPPO’s reputation in mobile photography. Under well-lit environments, photos taken with the foldable smartphone were clear and detailed, with balanced colours.

In low-light, however, the camera did not perform as well as it did in daylight. The photos were still passable, but there were some lost details and overexposed bursts of light, which kinda washes out the entire photo a little. Obviously, the phone is no Reno, but it’s good enough for a casual user.

Performance & Features

In my first impression, I mentioned that the OPPO Find N2 Flip isn’t quite the performer, and that still stands after a little more time with it. For a daily driver, it does well in running your usual casual apps like social media, Netflix, and general phone usage. If you want more, though, it heats up pretty quickly and tends to get a little stuck.

It doesn’t come with the latest flagship processor, so this is kind of expected, with the Mediatek Dimensity 9000+ processor and the Mali G710 GPU.

Another frustrating thing that OPPO needs to fix is the split screen function. I didn’t get to test this out when writing my first impression, and I thought, at the time, that it was because I couldn’t figure out how to make it happen. Turns out, it just doesn’t exist.

Apart from the camera app, which rearranges the layout to fit the top and bottom screens when the phone is set up “laptop style”, all other apps seem to not support split-screen at all. Not even the videos get sorted to one screen at a time — it just sits annoyingly on the crease.

In one way, this is another factor that makes you forget that it’s a foldable smartphone — because apart from the fact that it actually does fold unto itself, the Main Screen really just performs like a regular phone, without all the typical split-screen-multitasking-special-feature stuff typically found on its competitors.

OPPO says the Find N2 Flip “sets a new benchmark for flip phones”, and we really couldn’t agree more — at least where design is concerned. There is definitely room for more improvement, especially where performance is concerned, but as it is, it is a pretty competitive candidate in the foldable world.
