Just in early March, IKEA released the BASTUA collection, which consists of furniture, glassware and textiles designed with vibrant prints that emulate the simple and aesthetic beauty of Nordic nature.
The collection was done in collaboration with Finnish design house Marimekko to foster the notion of self-care with a touch of nature. Marimekko’s design is filled with styles and patterns centralising nature and sustainability themes.
IKEA, with its reputation as a lifestyle brand, saw this opportunity to release a self-care-themed collection based on the concept of a sauna. The collection was, in fact, named after a sauna in Småland – IKEA’s hometown.

IKEA BASTUA x Marimekko: Inspired by Nature

Inspired by Nordic nature and wellness, the collection drew inspiration from various concepts such as the flora and fauna ecosystem present in Finland. One of Marimekko’s designers, Maija Louekari, described one of the BASTUA’s central designs (ex. leaf shaped tray) as the leaves that grow next to local Finnish sauna buildings.

Another designer, IKEA’s Henrik Preutz, created the BASTUA glass with visions of the “...Scandinavian summer evening by a crystal-clear lake in mind…”. The drinking glassware in question adorns an irregular facet pattern to create refracted light and shadow patterns when placed under a light source.
IKEA BASTUA x Marimekko: Sustainable Sauna Wear

With a similar design, IKEA x Marimekko has also released the BASTUA kimono in various designs, such as in red and green stripes. Other textile products include shower curtains, cushions, bath sheets and bench towels.

In the collection, most of the decorative items and furniture are made of wood and paper. This is one of IKEA’s approaches to promoting self-care while collaborating with Marimekko to advocate for sustainability and nature preservation.
