Review: OPPO Reno8 T 5G — Nice Bling, Decent Screen, But Is It Worth The Price?

The aesthetics are good on this.

OPPO is starting off the year strong with the latest release, the OPPO Reno8 T 5G, a mid-range device that brings considerable upgrades to the Reno series, especially in terms of design. Truly, the device really stunned us when we first got our hands on the review unit.

Build & Design

The OPPO Reno8 T 5G may be one of the prettiest phones we’ve seen this year. The phone features OPPO’s Iconic OPPO Glow, which is basically millions of microscopic pyramid-shaped crystals that creates a colour-changing effect. With this, our Sunrise Gold review unit truly looks like the sunrise, and it’s fingerprint-proof to boot!

The two camera modules on the back of the phone are framed with metal rings, encapsulating a triple camera system in a minimalistic dual-lens design. Unfortunately, I could really do without the sticker-like film extending from the bottom of the camera module as it interrupts the flow of the design.

At 171g, the OPPO Reno8 T 5G is truly a lightweight champion, measuring only 7.7mm in thickness. Despite that, it still feels nice and solid in hand, and definitely lives up to its price.

Display

The OPPO Reno8 T 5G’s 6.7” curved screen sports a 120Hz refresh rate with 10-bit colour depth and 1,260 Hz high-frequency PWM dimming. With a 93% screen-to-body ratio, there are essentially no bezels on this phone.

OPPO Reno8 T 5G Review

Now, personally, I’m not the biggest fan of curved screens. They feel more like an annoying gimmick than something actually practical, given that they make the phone harder to use and more fragile. That holds true for the OPPO Reno8 T 5G too. While I have to admit that it does give me an immersive experience when watching movies, it’s just extremely annoying to constantly slip off the edge or mistouch something when I’m using the phone with one hand. Also, the distortion at the curved edges is really distracting, especially when gaming.

That said, the display itself is quite good. OPPO has put a lot of effort into improving the eye-care features on the Reno8 T 5G’s display. It features the industry’s best high-frequency PWM dimming, which basically means that the screen does not flicker as much even when on low brightness, thus protecting users from eye damage and visual fatigue. Alongside that, there’s also an AI adaptive eye protection system and hardware low blue light.

Camera

For its price, the OPPO Reno8 T 5G has impressive paper specs. Featuring a triple camera system led by a 108MP shooter, it has the highest pixel count in its price range. Under decent lighting conditions, it’s capable of capturing some truly decent photos with well-balanced lighting and details.

In terms of picture quality, the Reno8 T 5G performed well, but was not outstanding. It performed even less well in low-light conditions, despite OPPO’s claims that it has 37% more light intake compared to the Reno8 Z series.

Interestingly, there’s also a 40x Microlens that is able to zoom right into your subject and take some really up-close-and-personal photos, if that’s what you find interesting. While it’s not really something I’d use on the daily, I still had a lot of fun with it.

Another interesting thing is that the Reno8 T 5G can take videos from the front and back cameras simultaneously, which is a perfect feature for content creators and vloggers!

Performance & Battery

With the Snapdragon 695 5G, the Reno8 T 5G packs enough power and RAM to be a decent daily driver for busy professionals, but sadly, it did not live up to my expectations in terms of gaming. PUBG on the phone looked quite brutal, with chunky graphics and the occasional stutter. That said, other less graphically-challenging games looked and played fine, so this should be better for the less game-oriented business professionals.

OPPO claims that as many as 22 apps can be opened at the same time on the OPPO Reno8 T 5G, and that rings true as long as none of the apps are games like PUBG. The phone can still run smoothly even when I had Waze, Google Maps, Spotify, the Camera app, several social media apps and more open in the background.

As for the battery, the Reno8 T 5G was able to last a good part of the workday with pretty consistent use. It’s not the longest battery life in a smartphone, but it’s enough, especially since it also supports SUPERVOOC fast charging. The phone can get from 5% to 100% in just under an hour.

For a phone priced under RM2,000, the Reno8 T 5G is a pretty smartphone with some drawbacks in its performance. It’s not quite for the gamers, but if you’re a content creator looking for a decent smartphone as your daily driver, this is a great choice.
