Smartphone technology has evolved expansively in the past two decades, and a huge part of the evolution was in the screen itself. We went from non-touch to touchscreens, resistive screens to capacitive screens, black-and-white to coloured screens, flat screens to curved screens, and now, LCDs are being replaced with the far superior OLEDs. In short, we’re seeing more and more vivid screens in our hands.
Even during this rapid evolution, the latest technology has always been confined to the priciest flagships. It seems impossible to hope for a mid-range with a vivid OLED nowadays… or is it?
POCO, a brand that has always been popular for being super cost-effective, has just introduced its quasi-flagship phone equipped with a top-level screen — the POCO X5 Pro 5G. While the rest of the specs of the POCO X5 Pro 5G remains a mystery, what we do know right now is that it will come with a Flow AMOLED screen.

What is a Flow AMOLED?
Like a conventional OLED, a Flow AMOLED screen is composed of millions of organic light-emitting diodes, which emit light when powered on to produce a bright, high-contrast image. In both cases, there are two sets of substrates that are used to support the structure of the screen.
The biggest difference between Flow AMOLED and conventional OLED screens is the material used for the substrate. Flow AMOLED uses a flexible substrate, typically plastic or polyimide, rather than the traditional glass substrate. This allows for greater design flexibility and can lead to thinner, lighter and more durable devices, plus the advanced COP packaging process typically used for this type of screen helps to reduce the width of the screen frame as well.
Due to this, Flow AMOLED screens are widely used in high-end and flagship smartphones. However, POCO has come right out of the left field this year and outfitted its quasi-flagship X5 Pro 5G with Flow AMOLED, making them one of the best value phones with ultra-high performance.
Lighter, Thinner, Brighter & More Vivid — Meet the POCO X5 Pro 5G
The POCO X5 Pro 5G will come with a Flow AMOLED screen with 1920Hz PWM dimming, 120Hz high refresh rate, and 10-bit colour depth. These are all features that are typically only found in top flagship devices, but now, you can get them at a relatively affordable price, as the X5 Pro 5G is categorized as a mid-range quasi-flagship phone.
One of the biggest pain points for OLED users is that they tend to have low-frequency PWM dimming issues. That basically means that the screen will produce flickering when in low brightness, causing eye fatigue and affecting visual health, especially for people with sensitive eyes.
That won’t be a problem on the POCO X5 Pro 5G, as the Flow AMOLED with 1920Hz PWM dimming removes the flickering while maintaining image quality even when the brightness is turned down and using it in a dark environment.
Besides that, the POCO X5 Pro 5G’s 10-bit screen supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. This means that it can display up to 1.07 billion colours accurately and with natural transitions between colours. Whether you’re using it for daily audio-visual entertainment or professional photography, the screen will make sure that you get the best experience.
With the help of the Flow AMOLED screen, all these features can be housed in a slimmer and lighter body. The POCO X5 Pro 5G has a body weight and thickness of only 7.9mm and 181g, which is also the best-in-class for smartphones of the same price range.
