With the accessibility of smartwatches nowadays, we're witnessing the evolution of watches from simple timepieces to wearable health and fitness companions. The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 series is one such device, but until recently, Malaysians weren't able to make full use of its cutting-edge health features — specifically, blood pressure monitoring and the electrocardiogram (ECG) features.
The blood pressure and ECG tracking apps weren't locally available before on the Galaxy Watch5 series as Samsung was yet to receive certification from the Medical Device Authority of Malaysia when it was first released. Now, these health monitoring features are available for all users in Malaysia to enjoy full-range health monitoring (in terms of smartwatches) for easier fitness tracking.
With a built-in Photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor inside your Galaxy Watch, you can record your systolic and diastolic pressure, and pulse rate in the Samsung Health Monitor Blood Pressure app. To utilize the blood pressure tracking feature, simply:
- Install and set up Samsung Health Monitor app on your Galaxy Watch and Galaxy smartphone.
- Calibrate your Galaxy Watch based on the instructions on the Samsung Health Monitor app.
- Wear your Galaxy Watch on the same wrist as during the calibration and make sure the strap is properly fit, then measure your blood pressure.
- Record and review your blood pressure measurements.
On the other hand, the ECG tracking feature detects the electrical signals produced by your heart each time it beats. The heart’s rhythm and electrical activity information are recorded on a graph, thanks to the Galaxy Watch5's built-in ECG sensor. You can also make use of the Samsung Health Monitor ECG app to create, record, save, and export ECG data. Here's how you can use the feature:
- Pair your Galaxy Watch5 with your Galaxy smartphone.
- Wear the Galaxy Watch on your wrist with the best possible fit.
- Open the Samsung Health Monitor app on your Galaxy Watch.
- To take an ECG reading, rest your fingertip of the opposite hand lightly on the Galaxy Watch’s top button for about 30 seconds.
- The ECG data is synced to the paired Galaxy smartphone where a PDF report is created for your own review.
Keep in mind that if you want your Galaxy Watch, Galaxy phone, and Samsung Health Monitor app to function properly, you must set them up and calibrate them according to the detailed instructions that can be found on Samsung's official website.
