CES 2023: What Can We Expect From The Biggest Tech Show of The Year?

From awesome screens to fancy toilets, CES 2023 is truly for everyone.

Here comes the new year, and with it, new innovations and inventions. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), one of the biggest and most influential tech events in the world, will be held this year starting at 12.30 am on 6 January - 8 January in Malaysia time. At the event, brands all around the world will be showcasing their most recent technological breakthroughs.

For the past month or so, companies have been making their CES announcements in advance. Laptops, desktops, monitors, displays, accessories, graphics cards, and even home appliances of all sorts are slated to be announced and showcased on the grounds.

Even if you can’t make it personally to Las Vegas this weekend, we’ve made a list of all the interesting stuff here being showcased at CES 2023.

OLED, OLED, and OLED

It seems like 2023 will be the year of displays, just from the sheer amount of OLED screens that will be debuting at CES 2023. Tech giants like Samsung, ASUS, LG and Corsair all have announced their OLED displays that will be shown at CES 2023, ranging from laptops, desktops, monitors, or TVs.

In particular, CES 2023 will be having a large selection of OLED TVs on show. LG was the first to announce their third-generation OLED models based on their new “META Technology” which can achieve 60% brighter images and 30% wider viewing angles than conventional OLED displays, on top of improved energy efficiency.

For Samsung, their QD-OLED tech just introduced last year should be seeing more action this year as well in newer models and bigger sizes up to 77”. The tech giant has also announced their 100-plus-inch Micro-LED TVs, as did Sony, and more prototypes should appear during the event itself, including more affordable models.

As for computing, LG, ASUS, Samsung, Corsair, and more brands also have laptops, desktops and monitors lined up for show, most of them sporting OLED panels. Speaking of which…

World’s First Glasses-Free 3D OLED

Remember those paper red-and-blue glasses we used to wear to watch movies in 3D? That’s a thing of the past — but 3D technology is not.

ASUS will be debuting the world’s first glasses-free 3D OLED display in two of its new laptops showcased at the event. The new ProArt StudioBook 16 and VivoBook Pro 16X feature ASUS’s Spatial Vision that tracks eye movement to produce a defined image for each eye, thus creating 3D images without using funky glasses.

The glasses-free 3D technology is aimed towards professional creators who work with 3D models and content, such as architecture or engineering. Maybe those sci-fi scenes with holographic maps aren’t that far in the future after all.

Apart from the 3D OLED displays, the ProArt StudioBook 16 and the VivoBook Pro 16X will come packed with impressive specs as well, including an Intel Core i9 CPU with NVIDIA RTX 40 Series graphics.

Laptops, Desktops & Computer Peripherals

Smartphones are not much of the focus of this year’s CES, but computers definitely are. ASUS has released an entire fleet of laptops and desktops for every situation possible, including those aforementioned — the for-business ExpertBook B9 OLED and the for-student ASUS BR1102, to give some examples.

There’s also yet another world’s-first in this year’s CES: the MSI Titan GT77 will make its debut as the world’s first laptop with 4K/144Hz mini LED display. With a peak brightness of over 1000 nits and 1008 dimming zones, the laptop is capable of producing sharper images with less halo effect.

In terms of monitors, there are Samsung’s new Odessey, Viewfinity, and Smart Monitor lineups. Notably, attendees on the ground in Las Vegas will be able to get hands-on experience with the new Odessey Neo G9, Samsung’s revolutionary ultra-wide display with 8K resolution. The Viewfinity 5K, on the other hand, comes with an impressive 5K resolution with 99% DCI-P3 colour gamut, leading to colour-accurate creations.

And finally, Corsair will also be offering the Corsair Xeneon Flex, a 45” OLED monitor with customizable curvature. Debating between a flat or a curved monitor? Well, now you can get both in the same device — for a little shy of RM10k.

Processors

We’ll also be seeing a boatload of new processors at CES from the biggest manufacturers: namely, Intel and AMD.

Intel has announced its 13th-gen processors (all 40-plus of them!) with important upgrades in capacity. The premium-end CPUs, the i9-13900HX and i7-13850HX, are made for gaming and graphics rendering respectively. They now come with twice the amount of E cores, totalling up to 24 cores with better support for faster DDR5 memory.

According to their announcement, Intel’s 13-gen processors have already made their way to Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, ASUS, and Razer devices.

On the other hand, AMD announced plenty of chips and innovations in their keynote earlier today as well. What really cough our attention was the AMD Instinct MI300, a chip that combines CPU and GPU chipsets with 3D stacking. It’s not exactly for the regular joe consumer, but it’s still an impressive leap in technology that changes the industry as we know it. Besides that, AMD will be releasing the new Ryzen 7045HX CPU and Radeon 7600M XT GPU in February. We also learned that AMD technology is used across multiple industries, including film and automotive.

Fancy Toilets

Everything can be techy. Toilets can be fancy too — and that’s what we’re seeing at CES 2023: high-tech toilets. It is the Consumer Tech Show, after all.

Behold Kohler’s $11,500 smart toilet with support for Alexa and RGB LED. Announced back in 2019, the Kohler Numi 2.0 is now available for installation in homes. Integrated with AI voice assistant Alexa for hands-free operation, LED lighting, a bidet, an automatic lid, and a heated seat, it’s certainly the whole package.

If that sounds too much for you, maybe Kohler’s other toilets, the Innate Smart Toilet and Eir Smart Toilet are also showcased at CES 2023. Both of these are not as pricey as the Numi 2.0 (but still quite hefty), and have “basic” features like a customizable bidet, self-cleaning ultraviolet lights, and nightlights.

Some of this new tech is already in Malaysia; some are not, and we’re not sure when, if ever, they’ll be coming to here. DO stay tuned for more news and updates on CES 2023!
