The newest generation of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 has been making waves around the world since its release, but many people are still having doubts as to whether to upgrade since the Z Flip4 does essentially look identical to its predecessor. But that is a misconception — the Galaxy Z Flip4 offers an incremental yet significant upgrade under the hood, most notably in battery life.
So, what’s changed and what’s not?
Apart from all the other incremental yet significant changes on the Galaxy Z Flip4, the biggest upgrade is on the battery: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 has a 12% bigger battery over the Galaxy Z Flip3, going from 3,500 mAh to 3,700 mAh. On paper, it may not sound like much, but the extra 400 mAh can give you up to three hours of extra time on your phone.
Plus, where the Galaxy Z Flip3 only supported 15W fast charging, the Galaxy Z Flip4 now supports 25W fast charging, meaning you can juice up and be out of the house in less time than ever. To be exact, you can get a full charge in just under an hour!
What hasn’t changed is the slim build on the Galaxy Z Flip4. If anything, it’s now slimmer, though the size difference isn’t really visible on first look. At any rate, the same compact and portable clamshell form factor still pertain to Samsung’s newest foldable smartphone.
It’s not only the mAh.
Battery capacity, sure, the bigger the number, the bigger the battery; but it’s a different story when it comes to battery life. A larger mAh simply means that the device can store more power, but it does not indicate the power output — and that’s exactly why the Galaxy Z Flip4 can achieve such a better battery life over the Galaxy Z Flip3.
Powered by the much more power-efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, the Galaxy Z Flip4 has a better NPU, GPU, and CPU performance — in other words, it’s faster and better in day-to-day performance than its predecessor. Paired with the large 8GB RAM, it allows for flawless scrolling and smooth gaming.
In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip3 is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 888 5G processor.
Yes, Screen Size Matters Too.
The Galaxy Z Flip3’s 1.9” cover screen was already impressive since it was 4x bigger than the original Galaxy Flip, but the Galaxy Z Flip4 takes it a step further by adding more customization and features to the cover screen, including a dedicated settings panel for all your toggling needs.
This means that you no longer have to open the phone every time you want to check the time, turn on/off WiFi, turn on the flashlight, or even check and reply to messages — the Cover Screen can do it all. Naturally, a smaller screen uses less power, and the ability to work on the Cover Screen without having to engage the bigger Main Screen allows the Galaxy Z Flip4 to preserve more battery power and last longer on every charge.
In our review last year, we noted that the Galaxy Z Flip3’s battery was less than outstanding. It’s great to see Samsung making tangible improvements on the Samsung Galaxy Z series foldable phones, particularly in battery life and power efficiency. So whether you’re a vet looking for an upgrade or a foldable newbie diving head-first into an unflipped world, it doesn’t get any better than this.
