First Impression: Samsung Galaxy A73 5G - Already Looking Good!

Spoiler: it only had under 5% battery loss when idle for 24 hours.

Diving into the year 2022 with the main Galaxy S22 Series, it was natural that Samsung is to release the Galaxy A series soon after. And they did successfully in early March 2022.

The Samsung Galaxy A 2022 series comprises the Galaxy A33 5G, Galaxy A53 5G and Galaxy A73 5G. Samsung's direction for the latest series was to offer built quality, aesthetics and performance that is on par and appropriate alongside Samsung’s higher-end smartphone lines. Great battery life was also largely advertised.

Today, we're excited to kick off our review of the highest-end model in the series - The Galaxy A73 5G. Here's our first impression of the smartphone.

Build & Design

As you have noticed, we got our hands on the online-exclusive colour which was Mint. When we first saw it online via official marketing visuals, the colours seem to be closer to sky blue but upon receiving it, it is of this metallic blue with a soft hue of mint; sort of like Tiffany & Co's signature colour but with a splash of grey.

Coming at only 181g, the phone is... extremely lightweight. Even for a user with small hands (like mine), we can imagine you'll never tire of using this phone even though it comes with a huge 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display.

Oh, we also like the fact that the raised camera bump does not cause the phone to shake when being used while laid on flat surfaces.

Going back to the body; the Galaxy A73 5G's body is this slightly textured but smooth aluminium-like metal material. So not only is it a lightweight device, but it also won't slip out of your hands easily. Overall, a pretty easy and comfortable phone to hold in your hands. Not to mention, the phone's rated for IP67 dust & water resistance too.

In terms of ports, the Galaxy A73 5G has a USB C-type port (USB on the go) at the bottom, placed in the middle with a single bottom-firing Dolby Atmos-supported speaker at the side. Although it's only one speaker, the Galaxy A73 is pretty loud and immersive.

Display

Mentioning previously that although the Galaxy A73's Super AMOLED screen is huge at 6.7-inch, it is quite comfortable to use. The screen is rated at 800 nits; not the brightest but pleasant and clear enough when out during the day (from 3 PM to 4 PM) via the adaptive screen brightness feature.

With a refresh rate of 120Hz, the screen is a promising one to handle fast graphics well, but how smooth will the screen adapt when used for a prolonged period will be unveiled in our review coming up next.

Spoiler: We have to leak out that we had a brief encounter with the middle child Galaxy A53 5G not too long ago. We found that a few racing sessions (Asphalt) went really well at high-settings graphics.

Camera, UI, Battery & Performance

Much like most new Samsung devices nowadays, the OS is a clean one, with only the essential apps pre-downloaded. This includes the likes of Bixby Routine, Samsung Pay, Google Gmail, Youtube and so forth. To note, Samsung will also be supporting the new Galaxy A series in 2022 for up to 4 generational software support and updates.

For camera, the Galaxy A73 5G has a quad-camera set-up: 108MP +12MP +5MP +5MP. While we haven't got the chance to take more serious shots, our first few seem very promising, especially with night shots looking clear and sharper than with the Galaxy Z Flip3 (editor's current favourite mid-range device).

Performance-wise, the phone seem to warm up relatively fast while we downloaded and updated Genshin Impact. As the Galaxy A73 5G is equipped with the Snapdragon 778G 5G which has been optimised to run games smoothly without draining the battery too fast, we look forward to testing its performance.

Speaking of battery life, Samsung has advertised the Galaxy A series to have a lasting battery of up to 2 days. Although this wasn't clear when it comes to usage patterns, our experience with the phone on standby has been impressive; being idle for 24-hours only had about under 5% battery loss.

Conclusion

With many upcoming mid-range smartphones released these days, we are keen to see if the Galaxy A73 5G can pave the way for being the mid-range phone to live up to in 2022. Till then, keep a lookout for our full review soon!
