When it comes to night photography in smartphone cameras, Samsung now reigns supreme thanks to its new ‘Nightography’ system. Our team here at ProductNation had the opportunity to dive in and tested out this new camera optimisation.
What is Nightography?
Simply put, Nightography is Samsung’s take on night photography, with both phone hardware and software optimised to produce clear, sharp pictures in low light conditions. Not only that but Nightography also supports portrait mode, allowing you to now take those beautiful, bokeh-licious shots at night.
Now, the Nightography mode was one of the features that caught our eyes ever since the launch of the Galaxy S22 Series. It was even more exciting to know that the entire series: Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra, has Nightography mode available. So no matter your budget or usage style, you can enjoy the advanced camera system.
We were given the chance to take the Galaxy S22 Ultra out for a test run not too long ago. Right from the start, we knew we had to test the camera features after dark.

Recreating the Perfect Picture with Galaxy S22 Ultra
Nightography:
When compared to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, camera specs dows not seem to be that different from the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The latter has a 108MP main camera, two 10MP telephotos, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 40MP selfie camera. But there’s more to the surface than just megapixels.
To note, the 108MP main camera has an aperture of f/1.8 which allows for more light to enter. Not only that, but the 12MP ultrawide camera now has a bigger sensor to allow for more light, meaning it shoots better in low light conditions.
The cameras also now have AI Stereo Depth Map, detecting the objects in the background to allow for smoother edges in your portrait shots.
Overall, there was a minimum amount of noise with photos not looking overblown either which is a problem common with other smartphone cameras. Aside from the high ISO, it was also all thanks to the improved image processing which made the results comparable to photos taken by a professional DSLR.
Night Portraiture:
In addition to the enhanced Nightography features, Samsung’s portrait mode has also seen a significant improvement thanks to AI Stereo Depth Map. This feature uses AI to scan the objects in your background and blurs them to better highlight your main subject. It also works in tandem with AI Restoration which clarifies and sharpens your images without losing their natural look.
Our experience with the Nightography features on the Galaxy S22 Ultra was pleasant.
Portrait shots looked as if they were taken with an actual camera, with smooth edges on our main subject and some great soft bokeh present in the background as well. Although this works best on the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s main camera, the 3X zoom lens also aided in producing some impressive results.
Aside from Nightography, the Galaxy S22 Ultra also boasts other great photography capabilities and easily triumphed in our hearts. Here's how everything went.
Pet Portrait:
Pets aren’t often the best subjects for a photography session as they could never stand just still enough for that perfect shot. With the Galaxy S22 Ultra, however, you can take lightning-quick shots without needing to worry about much using the pet portrait feature.
What surprised us most wasn’t the fact that the pictures we took looked impressive, but that it barely took any effort at all to capture the subject. We simply opened up the camera, lined up our shot, and press the shutter.
No matter how much our furry subject moved, the outline of our furry friend was correctly sharpened and focused with a natural finish, alongside their bodily coat looking healthy and well-contrasted, colour-wise.
There are also options to change the lighting and even the focus of the picture, giving you the opportunity to get really creative with your photos.
Auto Framing:
Another of our favourite features is Samsung’s Auto Framing which lets you track up to ten subjects in a video and automatically adjust the shot to fit everyone in the picture. This is great for vloggers who want more interesting camera work but don’t want to invest in an expensive gimbal.
Much like in our experience, most users found the feature to work great, being almost instantaneous and able to accurately track movements while adjusting the angle smoothly. A little quip about this feature when in recording mode is that it’s only available for 1080p resolution.
Whether you’re looking for a smartphone that’ll last the day or a couple of years, the Galaxy S22 series is one of the finest lines of smart devices to pick up today. And with these camera features that we highlighted, it certainly helps that
