As someone who puts nearly zero effort into hairstyling, getting the chance to try one of Dyson’s most notable hair gizmos gave me feelings of unnerving excitement. In conjunction with the launch of Dyson’s next-generation Airwrap multi-styler, Dyson Malaysia’s team gave me the opportunity to experience its enhanced technology at the Dyson Service Centre & Store.

Editor's Background
Before we get started, here’s a little backstory. Over a decade ago, I tried to work some magic on my hair with a curling iron and ended up accidentally burning parts of my scalp. Since then, I’ve decided to keep it simple and perm my hair once a year.
First Impressions
I got my hands on the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler Complete Long edition, which is more suitable for hair that is chest-length or longer. Mine is at chest-length, making this edition just right.
Upon unboxing, I was pleasantly surprised that the wand and attachments come complete in a velvet storage case. This is so you can keep everything neatly each time you’re done styling your hair.
Due to my limited experience with hairstyling tools, I am not ashamed to admit that I was quite intimidated by the variety of attachments in front of me. But it was not long before I understood the function of each attachment. More in detail below:
Coanda smoothing dryer
What it’s for: Pre-styling hair and hiding flyaways
Dyson’s new Coanda smoothing dryer comes with multiple modes in on attachment for ease of styling. You can quickly take hair from wet to damp in its pre-style mode or finish your style by hiding flyaways in smoothing mode. Coanda airflow works by attracting and lifting longer hairs, hiding flyaways out of sight for a smoother and shinier finish.
Dyson’s hairstylist used pre-style mode on my hair in while it was still damp to prepare for the styling. She also used its smoothing mode at the end, smoothing flyaways as the finishing touch.
Airwrap barrels
What they’re for: Creating curls
With the previous generation, you have two separate barrels for different curl direction. This can be a little troublesome while styling as you would need to switch between barrels often. What’s noticeably different with the Airwrap barrels here is that you only have one barrel that allows you to create clockwise and anticlockwise curls with just one barrel to reduce styling time.
Left: post-styling
Right: pre-styling
Dyson’s hairstylist further enhanced my permed hair using the 40mm barrel with a combination of clockwise and anticlockwise curls during styling. This is so that my hair looks more voluminous and healthy.
Firm and soft brushes
What they’re for: Smoother and straighter hair
The enhanced Coanda airflow with this generation Airwrap multi-styler attracts and aligns hair with increased control for a straighter style. It propels air along hair strands for a smoother and straighter result.
I didn’t get to use these brushes as my hair is already permed and I was going for a look with more defined curls.
Round volumizing brush
What it’s for: Creating volume and shape
This brush is something I’m much more familiar with as I do use a standard volumizing brush with a hair dryer. Although I didn’t get to use this attachment during my hair makeover session with Dyson, I’m sure that using a volumizing brush on my crown after my curls are done will give my hair much more shape!
Experience & Final Thoughts
Getting my hair done with the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler feels quick, efficient and most importantly, not hot at all. With one of the Airwrap’s key selling points being styling without extreme heat, I am impressed.
In case you’re unaware, most hair styling tools such as curling tongs and hair irons use high heat and can damage hair in the long run. Dyson’s engineers, on the other hand, take advantage of the Coanda effect, an aerodynamic phenomenon that uses air instead of heat. This means there is no heat damage to your locks, while helping to maintain hair strength.
All in all, I had a wonderful experience with the Dyson team, and have no fear when it comes to the Airwrap multi-styler. But, I am still doubting my abilities when it comes to trying it out myself (although the hairstylist made it look so easy!). Looks like it’s time to start watching those YouTube tutorials.
The new Dyson Airwrap multi-styler is available in stores now, priced at RM2,699 in an array of colourways. Depending on hair length, enthusiasts can opt for either the Complete or Complete Long edition with varying barrel lengths.
