Many tech fans were treated to exciting mobile releases this year by Samsung. One of their latest lineups announced was the Galaxy S22 series.
To recap, the Galaxy S22 series focused on enhanced camera abilities as well as being imbued by a certain Samsung fan-favourite lineup - the Samsung Galaxy Note, now in the form factor of the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Enough chit-chat for now; we’ve got our hands on a flagship Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra unit. Here’s our first brief impression of the smartphone!
Build Quality & Design
The first checkpoint for us is the look and feel of the S22 flagship. In line with Samsung’s environmental vision - Galaxy For The Planet; every S22 series device is made with eco-friendly substances.
Samsung pointed out that recyclable materials tend to be more fragile, so 10 years were spent by Samsung’s R&D team to produce durable components for the S22 series.
At first glance, the Galaxy S22 Ultra just looks luxurious, with no protruding camera set like the previous generation to break its sleek profile. Whichever colour you choose, we are confident that it’ll look and feel good in most hand sizes.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra does look similar to its predecessor - Galaxy S21 Ultra, but only because Samsung fans were loud about their admiration for the minimalistic look, and we can see why. It truly has the embodiment of Samsung’s premium build standards.
Some new features to the Galaxy S22 flagship compared to the S21 variant include a protective Gorilla Glass Victus+ (front and back),
Ports & Connectivity
Keeping it simple; the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra sports a built-in slot for the S Pen, the loudspeaker, a Type C charging port and the SIM card slot. Of course, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has 5G connectivity for faster internet connection and an overall boost in performance.
Display
This is definitely a checkpoint we cannot miss ever on a Samsung smartphone.
It is said that the Intelligent Display will predict and dictate its surroundings to accurately adjust brightness. Needless to say, we had no issues viewing the phone in broad daylight.
Moving on to the display size; the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with a spacious 6.4-inch that’s been enhanced with Samsung’s proprietary Vision Booster which optimises contrast and details to your pictures when under bright light.
To provide better customisation preferences, users can now dial the refresh rate down to 1Hz (from 10Hz in S21) in order to preserve battery life better. Of course, users can also activate 120Hz option for demanding display usage such as gaming.
Battery
For this generation, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 5000 mAh battery life that supports an amazing 45W for fast charging (that's like some laptop-level support). The phone also has wireless and reverse charging support at up to 15W and 4.5W respectively.
If you're new to Android/Samsung mobile devices, note that in line with Samsung's eco-vision in reducing waste, no charger will be included in the phone.
We're excited about the battery optimisation for this generation of S Ultra which is said to be optimised for good temperature control as well, letting us use the phone at peak performance without much issue.
Camera
As mentioned before; the S22 series is largely focusing on the cameras. For this generation, the big upgrades to the S22 lineup including the S22 Ultra are Samsung's tech optimisation to perfect night photography, dubbed Nightography.
For those who didn't catch the Galaxy Unpacked Event 2022, the entire Galaxy S22 series will feature larger individual pixel sizes, larger sensors and advanced image processing.
Part of what will boost the low-light capabilities of the camera is also Samsung's Multi-Frame Processing which takes multiple shots and picks the best one to create a single, clear shot.
Camera Specs:
- Rear: Quad - 108MP (f/1.8) + 10MP (f/4.9) + 10MP (f/2.4) + 12MP (f/2.2)
- Front/Selfie: Single - 40MP (f/2.2); up to 4K@30/60fps
Processor & Gaming
The version that'll be available for Malaysians is the S22 Ultra with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor that's 4 nm in its thickness.
According to Samsung, the tiny and slim chipset means an increase in performance to the smartphone overall. In terms of multitasking, memory will be 8GB or 12GB RAM which are plenty to run multiple apps at once.
At first glance, the motions and fluidity are smooth on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. We also hardly felt any warmth or latency issue when running visuals-demanding apps.
How did you find the Samsung Galaxy S22 flagship? We’re excited to test and push it to its limit. So far, it seems to be a workhorse and the camera shots we took are impressive. We can see the Galaxy S22 Ultra easily becoming one of the best smartphones to get this year.
