Have you ever thought that all you want is to smell nice but you’re tight on budget?
We know what perfumes are, and we know what they do. With just one whiff, they have the power to create a memorable lasting moment or turn heads, literally.
For many of us, we naturally tie a particular scent to an emotion, brand or person. This is called Aromachology.
An example of Aromachology; you know what McDonald’s smells like. Or, you know how the cookie brand Famous Amos smells. Amusingly, many celebrities remember that Rihanna smells nice.
That’s the power of perfume. It becomes a signature, part of who you are when you’ve found the one right for you.
The ugly truth? Perfumes are quite an expensive affair.
Think about perfumes and we’ll forgive you for thinking about iconic signature scents from luxury designers such as Coach, Estee Lauder and Chanel. There’s also your niche perfume brands, which are dedicated fragrance houses like Diptyque, Jo Malone and Byredo.
Why Wearing Perfume Can Be Tricky in Malaysia
Whether you are a fan of luxury or niche brands, there’s one thing that they all have in common; their lines are usually made for a specific season (Spring/Summer & Autumn/Winter).
As Malaysia is a tropical country, whether it’s an Eau de Toilette or Parfum, there’s a great chance that they just won’t last or smell as good on us. They may even give off sillage that’s too intense due to our humid weather or have an expensive price tag due to the purity and concentration of essential oils in them.
How SugarBomb Was Created
Two passionate Malaysians who met each other in the United Kingdom happened to share the same vision and passion for fragrances in their home country. The founders believed that high-quality perfume is something everyone wants but can’t afford. It is with this thought that the duo decided to achieve a dream where everyone in their homeland could afford good quality perfumes.
From that moment in 2015, SugarBomb turned from ideas to reality. The brand aspires to deliver the best out of the best with its concept inspired by a brief period in history. This was all the way back to 3000 years ago during Ancient Greece and Egypt when fragrance and personal hygiene were considered relevant and important to each other.
That changed in the modern era when perfumes suddenly became a luxury symbol. It is this school of thought that pushed SugarBomb to deliver good-quality products and ensure inclusiveness as well as the ability of indulgence for everyone.
A compound word; the brand’s name - SugarBomb, was picked to signify its journey in creating ‘sweet fragrances that’ll blast the perfume industry.’
The brand’s mission is simple: To formulate value-for-money, long-lasting fragrances.
Most fragrance houses have a common trait that unifies all of their collections, making each one distinct and unique to their brand among others. With that, we had a chat with SugarBomb to find out what makes them tick.
What is SugarBomb’s speciality in the perfume industry?
SugarBomb: “For starters, we turn to Malaysian produces.
From individual scents to room fragrances, most SugarBomb fragrances are inspired and created from the abundance of tropical fruits that are available in our country. In fact, for our air freshener collection, fan favourites are Honeydew, Mango and Pomegranate. (this is mainly for air fresheners)
Not to worry; there are loads of scents infused with floral, woody and even marine elements in both the perfume and air freshener collection. Some of our perfume scents as mentioned are Floral Flora (Peony, Rose, Bergamot), Vanillavie (Pear, Patchouli, Orange Blossom) and Aquatic Miracle (Amber, Litchi, Magnolia).” the bottom half is perfume, but our air fresheners also have floral, woody and marine elements”
Interesting scents indeed. We noticed that SugarBomb has affordable prices. How is this possible?
SugarBomb: “We are determined to create affordable fragrances that do not sacrifice the quality of essential oils used in perfumes. That’s why SugarBomb does everything in-house from Research & Development to marketing.
It doesn’t stop there. SugarBomb pushes to maintain good fragrance performance by making sure that each one is tested on various materials.
For every scent, sensory tests are done to create a memorable fragrance that would last between 8 to 24 hours when worn under our humid weather. This duration is obviously extended for other ranges such as aromatic diffusers and air fresheners.”
What makes SugarBomb different from other perfume houses?
SugarBomb: “From the get-go, our mission has always been to be a leading fragrance distributor.
With this, we tread carefully and ensure that our perfume ingredients are internationally approved as well as scientifically tested. This is also done with the awareness of ensuring that prices will be kept friendly in the future.
We hope to reach the stars with a simple vision - To be an industry leader in fragrances, starting with the South East Asia region and eventually on a global scale.”
How are SugarBomb perfumes different from other local brands in the same range?
SugarBomb: “The last thing we would want is for precious products to be wasted. Therefore, we made sure to carefully formulate the alcohol used in the perfume in order to withstand the harsh tropical climate that Malaysia has.
From that, it ensures the performance of perfume that is up to SugarBomb’s standards in which we prioritise the long-lastingness of them at up to 48 hours. In addition, all fragrance formulation is made to be Muslim-friendly.
Apart from good quality alcohol, we also use high-quality ingredients from various continents. The compounds are then carefully done by our experts before delivering them to our beloved customers at an affordable price.”
Can you share with us ways to wear perfume?
SugarBomb: “Yes, plenty!
Like most perfume houses, SugarBomb’s fragrances are best worn on your pulse tips.
These points are where you can easily feel your pulse, and are the warmest spots on your body to help emit the fragrance. These spots also improve the projection or sillage of the perfume.”
Pulse points to apply at (we recommend sticking to non-covered areas):
- The neck, (2) the wrists, (3) behind the knees, (4) the groin area, (5) your inner elbows, (6) the foot and (7) the abdomen area.
How can we get SugarBomb perfumes to last longer on our bodies?
SugarBomb: “A reason why your skin may not be holding onto scent well is that your skin is not moisturising enough.
Luckily, this is easily fixed with body lotions and likewise. For a quick solution, just wear unscented lotion or body moisturisers before applying your perfume. This helps the skin to bind the smells onto dry skin longer.
You can also spray on your clothes or keep small pieces of paper sprayed with the perfume in your bag so that it smells good.”
Ways to extend your perfume’s longevity:
- Make sure to moisturise. The scent will stay on easier when the skin is properly hydrated.
- Do not rub your perfume upon application. Instead, dab with another part of your body to help take off and distribute the scent evenly.
- Make sure you keep your perfume in a cool, dark area. Sunlight can change the formula especially for formulas in a clear vial.
- Do not shake your perfume bottle. Shaking the perfume can cause infusion in the bottle which will shorten the lifespan of the perfume.
Best SugarBomb Fragrances (Reviews)
ProductNation was given a box of SugarBomb Parfums from the SugarBomb Discovery Set. It contains 30 fragrances and is the perfect affordable option for fragrance and perfume lovers to discover new scents.
From here, we easily determined how certain families of scents smell like from SugarBomb.
Here are our top 3 recommended SugarBomb fragrances:
Julia encompasses the scent of delicate flowers blooming silently on a tree. It knows its own beauty but doesn’t demand it. Instead, the world notices it.
The top notes open with a burst of sweet yet subtle citrus scent, followed by lingering white flowers and ends with a soft yet determined woody base fragrance.
This fragrance is described to be a soft yet fresh and mature aroma. It’s a truly feminine scent that’s perfect for a romantic evening.
- Top: Bergamot, Grapefruit, And Orange Blossom
- Middle: Pineapple, Peach, Orris, Jasmine, Rose And Gourmand Accord
- Base: Patchouli, Cedar, Musk, Amber, Vanilla And Tonka Bean
Nothing speaks "fresh" like a burst of subtle yet citrusy scent in the air. For the men out there, Citrus Invictus is a must-have in your wardrobe. With just a spritz of it, one will be entranced by the sweet smells of nature.
The formula opens with a whiff of Grapefruit, coupled with Marine accord to bring down the sharp sweet smell that most citrus perfumes have. Wear it a while longer and you'll soon notice how smooth it transitions into a scented trail of spice which encompasses notes of Jasmine flowers and Bay leaf.
Once you've worn the perfume for a whole day, it should end with a luxurious mix of smells containing notes of Amber and wood.
Formulated to give its wearer a valiant presence, the perfume exudes and stirs emotions around to leave behind a mysterious and dashing aura.
- Top: Fresh (grapefruit, marine accord)
- Middle: Spicy floral (jasmine, bay leaves)
- Base: Ambery (guaiac wood, patchouli, oakmoss, ambergris), woody
There’s just something calm and elegant about the smell of English Pear. SugarBomb’s take on this fruity scent is amazingly soft and woody with a hint of sweetness, like how a fresh pear should taste like.
The English Pear Room Diffuser feels as if there’s a bowl of ripe crispy pear that’s surrounded by a bouquet of white freesia flowers. Combined with the likes of amber and patchouli, this home fragrance smells to us as if you are in a cosy cottage in the middle of a forest.
- Top: Pear
- Middle: white freesia
- Bottom: Amber, Patchouli
