The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has just unveiled Qi2 25W, a significant upgrade to the current Qi wireless charging standard, promising faster and more efficient power delivery. According to WPC, this latest version, formerly labelled as Qi v2.2.1, delivers nearly 70% more power compared to the original Qi2 standard.

What Makes Qi2 25W a Big Deal?

This isn't just a minor speed bump. Qi2 25W is set to revolutionize how fast users can wirelessly charge their devices. With more powerful transmitters and improved efficiency, the new standard is expected to drastically reduce charging time while maintaining safe and consistent power delivery.

More importantly, WPC confirmed that both Apple iPhones and major Android smartphones are on board with the upgrade. For the first time, Android flagships are expected to join the Qi2 ecosystem alongside the iPhone, which has supported the Qi2 standard since the iPhone 12 series, thanks to Apple's MagSafe technology forming the foundation of Qi2.

Certification Already Underway

Though adoption of the Qi2 standard has been slow since its introduction in November 2023, WPC is now seeing a surge in momentum. In a recent limited launch, 14 devices,  including both receivers and transmitters, successfully passed the Qi2 25W certification process. And that's just the beginning.

WPC says the response has been overwhelming, with hundreds of additional products currently in the queue for full-scale certification. These include smartphones, wireless chargers, and accessories that will soon roll out support for Qi2 25W.

Why It Matters

The new standard simplifies wireless charging by bringing it under one umbrella, reducing compatibility issues, and improving power efficiency. Qi2 25W is expected to deliver a more streamlined experience, especially for users who switch between brands or use multiple devices.

With support from Apple and leading Android manufacturers, the widespread rollout of Qi2 25W could mark the beginning of a truly universal wireless charging future, where speed, safety, and convenience are no longer trade-offs.

Bottom Line: Qi2 25W is more than just a faster charger — it’s a leap toward a unified, high-performance wireless charging standard that finally bridges the gap between iPhone and Android. Expect it to arrive on new devices very soon.
