Nothing CEO Carl Pei has revealed that Nothing OS 4.0, built on Android 16, will land between September and November 2025, with the freshly launched Phone 3 first in line for the update. The company promises a smarter interface driven by on-device AI. Highlights include contextual UI suggestions, smoother performance tuning, and tighter integration with Google’s Gemini features baked into Android 16. Developers will benefit from the new Glyph Matrix API, unlocking interactive rear-panel widgets, mini-games, and glanceable tools that make full use of Phone 3’s 25×25 pixel light array. Users can also expect refreshed Material 3 styling, livelier animations, and more granular widget controls.

Nothing says the update will roll out to older handsets “soon after,” starting with Phone 2a and Phone 2, and maintains its pledge of five major OS upgrades and seven years of security patches—a timeline that puts the brand shoulder-to-shoulder with Google and Samsung on long-term support. By aiming to push Android 16 to users before September ends, Nothing positions itself among the speediest third-party OEMs to ship the latest Android version, beating many larger rivals and underlining its software-first strategy.
