Our review

These shoes get an 8/10 from us, as you get a relatively stylish pair of running shoes that are also comfy! While the shoes might seem bulky at first glance, it’s relatively easy to get used to the weight of the shoes, and they offer a protective feel too.

Overall, while they may be relatively expensive, these are by far one of adidas’ best running shoes available on the market.

Overview

The adidas 4DFWD 2 is built to help you stride forward at a faster pace, with the key to achieving this being its industry-first bowtie-shaped lattice midsole that is 3D-printed.

The midsole turns vertical impact into horizontal forward motion with every step you take, helping to create an unstoppable smooth forward transition with a new underfoot experience in your runs.

Details

  • 3D Printed 4DFWD Midsole - compress forward, reducing braking forces and transforming impact energy into a forward motion
  • Continental™ Outsole - provides extra grip for a confident run in any weather condition
  • Primeknit+ & Engineered Mesh Upper - designed to give an extra-supportive and snug fit, as well as remain comfortable for runners

Who is this for

As it does not come cheap, any intermediate to advance runners who frequent outdoor runs would be able to appreciate the shoes more.

Break new records in your new pair of running shoes!

- How to choose the best running shoes

Understand your feet type

When choosing a pair of running shoes, it is highly recommended that you first identify your feet type; whether you have normal arches, high arches or flat feet.

Brands like NIKE and ASICS are very willing to invest in R&D with the aim of designing the best running shoes catered to runners with different types of feet.

Identify your main intention of running

It’s important to know what you need the shoes for. It depends on whether you intend to be a recreational runner, track and field athlete, hiker, brisk walker, trail runner, marathoner, duathlon runner, or even a triathlon runner. There are different shoes for different types of running.

Check the compatibility of your shoes with your feet

Look for the cushioning support, stability, flexibility, durability, and grip of the shoes. Besides that,  you even have to consider the weight of the shoes.

- When should I replace my running shoes?

A good rule of thumb is to check the condition of your running shoes once you’ve covered more than 500km.

You will have to consider getting a new pair if:

  • there are signs of excessive wear due to overuse
  • the outsole of the shoes are deteriorating

- Is training in different shoes better for the feet?

It is true up to a certain extent. Of course, technically you have to pay more attention to the contour of different shoe models. Generally speaking, if you are a seasonal runner who joins races from time to time, Justin suggests you own at least three different types of shoes; recreational shoes, training shoes and also racing shoes.

By having at least 3 types of shoes on hand, each pair of shoes will serve each of its purposes well and your shoes will have a longer life span. It would be a waste to wear out your racing shoes to the mall instead of just wearing your lifestyle shoes. Plus, it's important to wear the right shoes when training.

- When should I start breaking my shoes in before a competition?

If you are a competitive runner, Justin recommends that you perform a minimum of 3 interval sessions by running at 80% - 90% capacity and LSD (Long Slow Distance) runs of a minimum of 15km during your weekends. Doing so will allow you to ascertain whether your running shoes are the perfect pair for you based on the sensations that you feel during those runs.

- Do running shoes need a recovery period after a run?

According to Justin, even though you may need a day or two to recover from a hard run, your shoes don't. However, it is important to note that different types of shoes are necessary for different types of training as well as for the sake of maintaining the form and longevity of the shoes.

To illustrate how you can alternate between different shoes --for instance, if you’ve just done a hard session 800m x 8sets of interval running wearing your training shoes on Monday, you should swap them for your recreational running shoes for an easy run on Tuesday. However, in the case where you’ve recovered from your previous session, you can put on your racing shoes for a tempo run of 10km, running at your goal-pace as a simulation of a real race.
