Apple just dropped the new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, and the performance numbers are genuinely impressive. We're talking up to 8x faster AI performance than M1 models, 24-hour battery life, and storage that reads at up to 14.5GB/s.

The Big Numbers

Apple's not holding back with performance claims on the M5 Pro and M5 Max:

M5 Pro Performance:

  • Up to 7.8x faster AI image generation vs M1 Pro
  • Up to 6.9x faster LLM prompt processing vs M1 Pro
  • Up to 5.2x faster 3D rendering in Maxon Redshift vs M1 Pro
  • Up to 3.9x faster LLM processing vs M4 Pro

M5 Max Performance:

  • Up to 8x faster AI image generation vs M1 Max
  • Up to 6.7x faster LLM prompt processing vs M1 Max
  • Up to 5.4x faster video effects rendering in DaVinci Resolve vs M1 Max
  • Up to 4x faster LLM processing vs M4 Max

What's Actually New?

Fusion Architecture

Apple built the M5 Pro and M5 Max using a technology called "Fusion Architecture", which combines two dies into a single chip. This is a fundamental redesign that enables:

18-core CPU with 6 "super cores" (Apple claims these are the world's fastest CPU cores)
12 all-new performance cores optimised for multithreaded pro workloads
Up to 30% faster CPU performance compared to M4 Pro/Max

Neural Accelerators in the GPU

Every GPU core now has a Neural Accelerator built in, which means:

  • Running large language models (LLMs) locally on your laptop
  • Training custom AI models without cloud services
  • AI-powered video editing, music production, and design work
  • Real-time image generation and enhancement

For Malaysian content creators and developers working with AI tools, this means you can do things locally that previously required expensive cloud computing.

Memory That Actually Matters

M5 Pro: Up to 64GB unified memory with 307GB/s bandwidth
M5 Max: Up to 128GB unified memory with 614GB/s bandwidth

The higher bandwidth means smoother performance when working with:

  • 8K video projects
  • Massive Photoshop files with hundreds of layers
  • Complex 3D renders
  • Multiple AI models running simultaneously

Storage Speed Upgrade

Up to 2x faster SSD performance, reaching speeds of 14.5GB/s. For context, that's fast enough to transfer a 100GB 4K movie in about 7 seconds.

Storage bumps:

  • M5 Pro now starts at 1TB (previously 512GB)
  • M5 Max now starts at 2TB (previously 1TB)
  • Base M5 model now starts at 1TB (previously 512GB)

The Battery Life Claim: 24 Hours

Apple says the new MacBook Pro can last up to 24 hours on a single charge.

For Malaysian professionals who work remotely or travel frequently, this is huge. You can literally work all day without having to hunt for power outlets.

And unlike many Windows laptops that slow down when unplugged, Apple claims the MacBook Pro delivers the same performance whether it's charging or running on battery.

Fast charging is also included: 50% charge in just 30 minutes using a 96W or higher USB-C adapter.

The macOS Tahoe Experience

The new MacBook Pro ships with macOS Tahoe, which includes:

Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone app
Communicate across languages in real-time — useful for Malaysian professionals working with international clients.

Improved Spotlight
Find apps and files faster, take actions directly from search.

Apple Intelligence upgrades
More capable AI features while protecting privacy (currently in beta, with support for multiple languages, including Chinese and Malay, coming).

Liquid Glass design
Refreshed visual design with updated Control Centre and customisable folders, app icons, and widgets.

Phone app on Mac
Relay cellular calls from your iPhone - convenient if you're working on your Mac and don't want to switch devices.

Other Notable Upgrades

Connectivity: Thunderbolt 5

Three Thunderbolt 5 ports for high-speed data transfer, plus HDMI (supports up to 8K), SDXC card slot, and MagSafe 3.

Wi-Fi 7 & Bluetooth 6

Thanks to Apple's new N1 chip, you get improved wireless performance and reliability. Great for crowded Malaysian cafes and co-working spaces with congested Wi-Fi networks.

12MP Centre Stage Camera

Auto-frames you during video calls and includes Desk View support, which shows your desk from above, useful for product demos or teaching.

Nano-Texture Display Option

Reduces glare in bright environments. If you work outdoors or near windows often, this could be worth the upgrade.

The Environmental Story

Apple's pushing hard on sustainability:

  • 45% recycled content
  • 100% recycled aluminium enclosure
  • 100% recycled cobalt in battery
  • 50% renewable energy in manufacturing
  • 100% fiber-based, recyclable packaging

For environmentally conscious buyers, this matters. And the long software support (Apple typically supports Macs for 7+ years) means you won't need to upgrade as frequently.

Who should buy this:

✅ Intel Mac users ready to upgrade
✅ M1/M2 users working with AI or intensive creative workflows
✅ Professionals who need maximum power and portability
✅ Video editors, 3D artists, developers, researchers

Who should wait:

❌ M4 Pro/Max users
❌ Budget-conscious buyers
❌ Casual users who don't need pro-level performance
❌ Anyone hoping for dramatic design changes (it looks the same)

Orders open soon at apple.com/my/store, the Apple Store app, and Apple Authorised Resellers across Malaysia.
