For many, the name BlackBerry still conjures up images of a square-rectangle black device with tiny keyboards. However, the company actually hasn't manufactured those phones since 2020, as it's now moved on to developing high-end cybersecurity and secure communications software.
BlackBerry recently celebrated a major expansion of its Asia Pacific (APAC) Regional Headquarters in Malaysia, with Canadian officials, including Parliamentary Secretary of Trade Yasir Naqvi, visiting the new facilities in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya.
The Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (CCoE) in Cyberjaya, soon to be revamped with a "cyber war room" and a SOC simulator (a Security Operations Centre training area), is crucial for developing high-level local talent. Malaysians will have access to over 55 specialised courses, helping them become skilled "cyber-defenders." This dramatically upskills the national cyber-workforce, making local employees highly valuable both at home and globally.
By setting up their regional support hub and training centre here, BlackBerry is deepening its partnership with Malaysian regulators like the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission). This strengthens Malaysia’s ability to support key national systems, like government services, power grids, and financial institutions, against sophisticated cyber threats and even disaster response scenarios. It makes the entire country more digitally resilient.
The Canadian government’s multi-year investment of $3.9 million (CAD) in cybersecurity training seems to signal Malaysia's growing reputation as a trusted regional hub for secure communications and technology, attracting more foreign investment and advanced technology to the country.

What Does This Expansion Actually Mean?
The expansion involves two main components, both focused on supporting Asia-Pacific clients and governments from a central, trusted location:
-
New HQ in Q Sentral, Kuala Lumpur: This serves as the new sales and marketing headquarters, focusing on bringing BlackBerry's advanced software and solutions to clients across the region.
-
24/7 Support Centre in Mont Kiara: This regional support centre operates constantly, providing round-the-clock technical assistance to governments, critical infrastructure operators, and businesses that rely on BlackBerry’s security solutions.
-
CCoE Revamp in Cyberjaya: As mentioned, this is the training and education centre, providing hands-on, real-world learning to prepare cyber-defenders for complex digital espionage and attacks.
