For a long time, you were never able to share a proper Live Photo (a still picture that comes with a brief video clip and sound) on WhatsApp. The photos would arrive as boring, static images, or at best, as low-quality GIFs that lacked sound.

However, WABetaInfo has announced a new WhatsApp feature that allows users to share motion photos in chats, groups, and channels. You have the option to either send a Live Photo as a dynamic clip with movement and audio or convert it into a static image.

Once shared, a motion indicator will appear on the corner of the sent photo, so it can be identified as animated content.

Compatible with iOS and Android

WhatsApp is also reportedly allowing this feature to work seamless between different phones. Even though the photos have different names on iOS and Android, WhatsApp will automatically adapt them so they look correct on either device.

When an Android user receives a Live Photo, it will appear as a motion photo on their device. Conversely, when iOS users receive a motion photo from an Android user, it will appear as a Live Photo on iOS.

This feature is now being made available to some beta testers on the latest version of WhatsApp for iOS, with a wider rollout expected in the coming weeks.
