Imagine driving on a motorway and your car handles the traffic for you, navigating lanes and even changing them on its own.
Thanks to a new collaboration between tech giant Qualcomm and the BMW Group, that's not so far away. The two companies have unveiled a state-of-the-art automated driving system called Snapdragon Ride Pilot, which is set to debut in the all-new BMW iX3.
At its core, the Snapdragon Ride Pilot is an advanced "brain" for the car. It's built on a powerful Qualcomm system and a special software that was co-developed by both companies. Designed to meet the highest safety standards, it can handle various levels of automated driving, from entry-level safety assists to a more advanced Level 2+ system. It can offer hands-free driving on approved motorways and even handle navigation in urban areas, acting as a smart co-pilot to reduce the stress of daily commutes.

How the Car "Sees"
For a car to drive itself, it understands its surroundings using its 360-degree perception to look out for other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, traffic lights, and road signs.
The system uses clever technology like a bird's-eye view and special cameras to get a clearer, more complete picture of what's around it. This information is then processed by a powerful AI that doesn't just see obstacles, but also manuever around them. The car can make safe decisions in complex driving situations like busy intersections.
On top of that, the BMW iX3 also comes with a separate Qualcomm chip that enables vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. This allows the car to "talk" to other vehicles, road infrastructure, and pedestrians. This "extra-sensory" awareness helps to uncover unseen risks and can significantly reduce the chances of a collision.
The Snapdragon Ride Pilot is now available to other car manufacturers.
