For a small business in Malaysia, like a café in Kuala Lumpur or a souvenir shop in Penang, serving international tourists can be a great way to grow. But what happens when a tourist wants to pay with their favourite mobile app from back home, and you can't accept it? A lost sale.
Malaysian payment company Paydibs has collaborated with Alipay+ to allow Paydibs merchants to accept payments from over 15 leading e-wallets and bank apps from around the world. This means a tourist from South Korea can pay with their Kakao Pay app, or a visitor from the Philippines can pay with GCash, all without a hitch.
This partnership can help small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). This new system reduces what the industry calls "checkout friction." Instead of fumbling with cash, foreign currencies, or a card that might not work, a customer can simply open their familiar app, scan a QR code, and the payment is done.
By accepting a wide range of international payment methods, these businesses can instantly attract and serve a much larger pool of customers. When tourists know they can pay easily, they are more likely to make a purchase, which helps improve "conversion rates" and ultimately boosts a business’s bottom line.
Instead of needing to set up different payment systems for each country, all these cross-border payments are managed through a single platform. This makes accounting and tracking sales much easier. In essence, the Paydibs and Alipay+ partnership gives Malaysian SMEs a straightforward way to reach international customers more easily across Southeast Asia and beyond.
