Apple is reportedly considering a major change to its virtual assistant: powering a revamped Siri with Google's Gemini artificial intelligence tool.

Bloomberg reported that both companies are in early discussions about a partnership that could reshape Apple's AI strategy for the iPhone, iPad, and other Apple's other products.

Siri has lagged behind its voice assistant rivals. Apple had intended to introduce a smarter, AI-driven Siri this year as part of its Apple Intelligence initiative, but executives delayed the launch until early to mid-2026, admitting the early version wasn't reliable enough to ship, according to CNET.

That delay set Apple back, while Samsung, Microsoft, and Amazon have already launched more capable and conversational AI assistants.

Generative AI has proven harder to master internally for Apple, but Apple has leaned on partners to bridge that gap. Today's Siri can already route certain requests to OpenAI'S ChatGPT. Apple Intelligence is set to upgrade that integration with the recently-launched GPT-5. You'll be able to ask ChatGPT for writing help, image understanding, and complex questions directly through Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence.

Apple is reportedly exploring additional options such as Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini.

There's already a long-running partnership between Google and Apple, so this integration isn't surprising if it does indeed happen. Google already pays billions annually to remain the default search engine on Safari, and a Gemini deal could extend that relationship into Apple's core AI experience, according to TechRadar.

Siri has not had a significant upgrade since it was introduced nearly 15-years ago. It still remains more a digital assistant, rather than a capable AI tool.

Apple could leverage on Gemini's much more accomplished generative AI and one of its models (Gemini Pro, Flash, Lite) to bring the conversational intelligence lacking in Siri. With Gemini's integration with Siri, Siri could emerge much less constrained and more conversational.
