Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7: Why Have Such a High 200MP Camera?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 has launched with something we've never seen before in a foldable smartphone: a massive 200MP main camera. This high number is actually achieved using a process called pixel binning that combines adjacent pixels to create “large” pixels.

Pixel binning may not be a natural megapixel achievement, but it does allow the phone to stay affordable, slim and lightweight while users can enjoy a camera with a high light-capturing ability and with less—if not little—noise, resulting in a clearer image. This is true especially for images shot during the day.

So, with the 200MP camera, what else can you do?

The 200MP Powerhouse: More Than Just Numbers

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7’s 200MP wide-angle camera is one of the highest megapixel counts out there on a foldable smartphone, and with the addition of the ProVisual Engine, both photos and videos will be bright, clear and sharp.

Imagine, you're at the Petronas Twin Towers during golden hour, trying to capture that perfect shot for your Instagram. With the Z Fold7's 200MP sensor, you're not just getting a photo; you're getting a canvas that lets you crop, zoom, and edit without losing quality. All of what the Petronas Twin Towers have in distant architectural detail could offer is now crisp and clear.

Working in tandem with the 200MP ultra-high-resolution main camera is the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, which complements Samsung’s AI-powered imaging system that works to perfect images with AI after capture. With all of that, Samsung has essentially packed a professional camera into a foldable form factor.

When To Use 200MP vs 50MP vs 12MP?

It’s best to use the 200MP mode for images that require maximum resolution, such as large prints, or when you need to do a lot of cropping. Even printing images for your framed photos or art show would benefit from the 200MP. Essentially, it’s whenever detail preservation is critical.

To note, the 200MP is considered a specialized tool rather than a default resolution for all your images. This is akin to having a macro lens or a 50mm prime lens in your toolkit. They are highly useful for specific situations such as flower closeup shots (macro lens) or intimate portrait shots (50mm lens). Thus, they are not necessary for everyday photography.

50MP on the Galaxy Z Fold7 is, however, stunning for close to everyday shots that need a lot of detail preservation, be it bright outdoor shots or well-lit indoor scenes. They are great as an in-between the 200MP—which uses more storage—and the 12MP—that uses less storage but preserves less details.

With that said, using the 12MP is great for when you want to take daily shots for your social media circle or quick snapshots to send to friends and family. They may not be the highest in detail preservation, but they already do a lot more to capture other details that matter, such as word documents & sceneries around you for keepsake.

Night Photography: Performance Without Sacrificing Details

Have you always wanted to capture the cityscape of Kuala Lumpur? Or maybe you want to capture the night sky with stars in your rural hometown? The Galaxy Z Fold7 is optimised to help you shoot in the dark with Nightography.

Whether you're capturing the vibrant street food scene in Jalan Alor or the serene night views from KL Tower, the enhanced Nightography capabilities ensure your low-light shots aren't just usable – they're stunning. The AI-powered processing intelligently brightens shadows while maintaining natural colors, something that's particularly impressive when shooting Malaysia's diverse lighting conditions.

FlexCam: The Ultimate Content Creator's Tool

Here's one of the highlights and perks of owning a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7. Bend the phone halfway (or any desired angle) and you enter FlexCam mode, which allows you to capture hands-free videos and full group selfies without the need for a tripod.

For Malaysian content creators, this is revolutionary. Imagine setting up your Z Fold7 on your café table in Bangsar, propping it at the perfect angle, and filming your food review completely hands-free. The FlexCam will also follow your movements and zoom in and out. To capture a hands-free photo, use Samsung gestures such as showing the palm of your hand to take a photo.

The FlexCam feature transforms the Z Fold7 into a portable studio. Whether you're an influencer demonstrating techniques or explaining gadgets, the Galaxy Z phone lets you use the camera with many different angles while maintaining hands-free operation.

The idea of binning is to allow you to enjoy great photography experiences in a smartphone camera rather than always stressing about carrying your other camera equipment everywhere you go.
