At a recent summit in Kuala Lumpur, HUAWEI and the government announced a major collaboration to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence across the country and the wider ASEAN region. The partnership, which includes ambitious plans to nurture local talent and attract investment, aims to build an "AI region" powered by cutting-edge cloud and AI technology.

Ethical and Sustainable Growth

Minister of Digital, Gobind Singh Deo, highlighted the government's strong commitment to a responsible AI future. He explained that the National AI Office is fast-tracking a new action plan and regulatory frameworks to ensure that AI adoption is ethical and sustainable. This is a critical step, as it provides a safe and trustworthy environment for businesses to innovate and grow. The government's efforts, supported by initiatives like Malaysia Digital (MD), are being amplified through strategic partnerships with technology leaders like HUAWEI.

Nurturing Future AI Talent

One of the most significant announcements from Huawei was its commitment to strengthening Malaysia's AI talent pipeline. The company's CEO, Simon Sun, revealed a goal to train 30,000 Malaysian AI professionals over the next three years. This programme will target a wide range of people, from students and government officials to industry leaders.

In addition to nurturing local talent, Huawei plans to act as a bridge, helping to attract Chinese AI companies to Malaysia. This will encourage new investments and partnerships with local businesses, driving homegrown innovation and creating new Malaysian AI entities. This broad initiative is designed to create a strong and inclusive AI ecosystem that empowers local people and businesses.

The Power Behind the AI Revolution

HUAWEI Cloud's Vice President, Aka Dai, explained that the company will ramp up local investments and provide the core technology to drive this regional growth.

HUAWEI Cloud has a massive network of data centres globally, including five regions and 17 availability zones in ASEAN. Businesses get ultra-low latency, which is essential for fast and efficient AI processing. The company's cloud service supports over 160 mainstream open-source models for businesses to operate from.

HUAWEI's own suite of Pangu AI models, which are a type of multimodal model, are key to its "AI for Industries" strategy. These help businesses quickly develop specialised AI solutions tailored to their specific needs.

For the average consumer, these big announcements might seem like something happening behind the scenes, but this partnership can potentially bring significant changes to our digital infrastructure.

The government is focusing AI in key sectors like healthcare and smart cities, which means more efficient public services.

By nurturing local talent and encouraging partnerships, this initiative will lead to new, homegrown technologies and apps, creating more job opportunities.

For business owners and professionals, the availability of powerful cloud and AI technology, combined with a growing talent pool, will help local businesses become more competitive.
