The world of technology is changing fast, with AI set to play a huge role in the global economy. To make sure Southeast Asia doesn't get left behind, the ASEAN Foundation, with support from Google.org, has officially launched a major new programme called AI Class ASEAN.
The goal of this initiative is to equip 5.5 million people across the region with essential AI skills. This includes young people, educators, and even parents.
AI is expected to add a staggering $19.9 trillion (approximately RM83.98 trillion) to the global economy. Beyond just economic growth, it has the potential to solve some big problems. AI can help bridge the digital divide, making technology more accessible to everyone.
How the Programme Works

The platform provides free training through 70 localised modules curated to meet the specific needs and cultures of the region. It combines an AI-powered chatbot, discussion forums, and real-time translation support to make learning easy to grasp for people with zero tech knowledge.
A key part of the programme is its "train-the-trainer" model. The initiative plans to train 2,000 master trainers who will then go out into their own communities to deliver AI literacy training to over 800,000 people.
This approach ensures that the knowledge spreads far and wide, reaching communities that might not otherwise have access to this kind of training.
If you're interested to gain real-life experience and work on meaningful projects with The ASEAN Foundation, you can sign up for their internship programme, with applications closing on Sunday, 24 August. Click here to apply and for more info.
