In the world of artificial intelligence, many of the big names are either Western or Chinese. However, Malaysian company Zetrix AI Bhd has entered the scene offering an AI large language model for the Muslim community.

Named NurAI, this model was built using open-source AI know-how from DeepSeek. The main goal of NurAI? Provide an alternative to the major Western and Chinese models, offering guidance based on shariah, the comprehensive system of Islamic laws.

What Does NurAI Do?

NurAI understands and operates within an Islamic framework. It offers guidance on a wide range of topics, from everyday matters like what's considered halal (permissible) to more complex subjects like legal advice based on shariah values.

The model can provide this guidance in several languages, including Malay, Indonesian, Arabic, and English, potentially serving millions of people across Muslim-majority nations and communities.

According to Zetrix AI, NurAI can handle subjects ranging from modern topics like healthcare and finance to classical Islamic studies like history and the Quran. It's all about making sure the advice and information it provides are consistent with Islamic principles.

While NurAI will first be available as a free, consumer-facing app (with paid subscription options for more comprehensive features), the company has bigger plans to turn it into a tool for businesses and governments.

For example, Zetrix is already working to deploy the model within Malaysia's shariah-based court system. Here, it will help automate administrative tasks, making the court's operations more efficient. To ensure the AI is accurate, Zetrix is currently gathering a vast amount of training data, including information from ancient manuscripts.

The company plans to sell its NurAI chatbot to a variety of institutions in the future. Datuk Mohd Jimmy Wong Abdullah, a non-executive director of Zetrix AI, said they aim for NurAI to be used in the daily operations of Islamic financial institutions, financial technology firms, halal certification bodies, and shariah authorities.

Subscriptions for the full service are expected to be priced between $5 and $50 a month (about RM21.15 to RM211.55), offering various levels of access and functionality.
