OpenAI has released two new AI models, gpt-oss-20b and gpt-oss-120b, which are available for anyone to download and run on their own computer without needing to be connected to the Internet.
Unlike the company's famous paid service, ChatGPT, these are "open-weight" models, providing access to the core AI engine itself.
Locally-Run AI on Your Desktop
OpenAI has released two versions to suit different hardware:
-
The smaller gpt-oss-20b can run on a standard consumer laptop with at least 16GB of memory.
-
The larger gpt-oss-120b is a more heavy-duty model that requires a more advanced setup, such as a single high-end Nvidia GPU.
They only work with text, but they can browse the web, execute code, and act as an AI agent to help you navigate software.

You no longer need to rely on a constant connection to a massive data centre. The AI will work on your desktop PC or laptop — right on the device, provided your hardware is powerful enough. It also makes AI a useful tool in places with poor internet, like on a flight or in a remote area.
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman doesn't see these releases as a free replacement of the company's proprietary models. Rather, he thinks of them as "complementary" to the company’s paid services, like the application programming interface currently used by many developers.
"Open-weight models have a very different set of strengths,” he said. Unlike ChatGPT, you can run a gpt-oss model without a connection to the internet and behind a firewall.
They’re available to download for free right now on Hugging Face.
gpt-oss-20b Is Available On Microsoft Windows
Microsoft has quickly made the gpt-oss-20b model available for download on its Windows AI Foundry.
Microsoft has pre-optimised gpt-oss-20b for local inference, which suggests that support for more devices could be underway.
