Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made a bold claim about the future of technology, stating that people without AI glasses will be at a "significant cognitive disadvantage."

In a recent blog post and earnings call, Zuckerberg outlined his vision of a future where these smart glasses become our primary way of interacting with a new kind of intelligent assistant. This vision is part of Meta's long-term strategy, linking AI and the Metaverse together in a single, powerful device.

At the heart of Zuckerberg’s idea is a concept he calls "personal superintelligence." Simply put, this is an AI that goes beyond basic chatbots. It's an assistant that not only teaches itself and surpasses human thinking, but also becomes deeply personalised to help you with your specific goals.

Meta imagines this companion as being capable of handling a huge range of tasks. For example, it could remember a user’s wedding anniversary, help plan a celebration, or even assist with more complex personal issues. The key is that this AI is always learning about you and your context, becoming a true partner in your daily life.

Why Glasses?

For this "personal superintelligence" to work effectively, it needs to understand your world in real time. Zuckerberg argues that this is why smart glasses are the "ideal form factor" for AI, much better than a smartphone. He explains that glasses can "see what you see, hear what you hear, and interact with us throughout the day," giving the AI a constant stream of context.

And it doesn't seem to be an out-of-reach goal. Meta has already teamed up with eyewear makers like Ray-Ban to produce smart glasses. These devices let you listen to music, take photos, and ask Meta's AI questions about what you're seeing, among other things.

Zuckerberg believes that adding a display to these glasses will unlock even more value, whether it's a small screen for notifications or a full holographic view for augmented reality.

“I think in the future, if you don’t have glasses that have AI — or some way to interact with AI — I think you’re … probably [going to] be at a pretty significant cognitive disadvantage compared to other people,” he added.

Zuckerberg's vision for AI glasses isn't separate from Meta's broader goal of building the Metaverse. He sees glasses as the perfect launch pad to bring together the physical and digital worlds.

The ability of these glasses to overlay digital information onto our view of the real world is the foundation of the Metaverse vision. As Zuckerberg puts it, the Metaverse will be "extremely important" in the future, and AI will be the key to making that vision a reality, creating a digital world that is both immersive and incredibly smart.

“The other thing that’s awesome about glasses is they are going to be the ideal way to blend the physical and digital worlds together,” he said. “So the whole Metaverse vision, I think, is going to … end up being extremely important, too, and AI is going to accelerate that.”
