The government has announced that it will continue the Rahmah Package for internet services to help Malaysians cope with rising living costs. Affordable internet will remain a priority, particularly for low-income households and students.

This initiative, which focuses on providing affordable connectivity, was confirmed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in Parliament yesterday, 31 July.

While the exact details of the new offerings have yet to be revealed, the announcement follows the successful rollout of similar initiatives in 2023.

The 2023 Rahmah Packages

There were three packages introduced in 2023 that were highly popular and centred around providing low-cost access for different needs.

  1. 5G Rahmah Package: This offered a competitive 60GB of monthly data for just RM60 per month, making 5G technology more accessible to the average Malaysian.

  2. Rahmah Prepaid Student Package: For students, there was a special prepaid package priced at RM30, which came with a minimum of 30GB of data and was valid for an impressive 180 days.

  3. Fixed Broadband Unity Package: For the B40 group, the government also offered an affordable fixed broadband plan at RM69 per month, providing a minimum connection speed of 30Mbps.

The Big Question: What's Next for These Packages?

With the Prime Minister's latest announcement, the big question is whether these exact packages will be "given a new lease of life," or if they will be updated and rebranded to better suit current consumer data usage.

Data consumption has changed significantly, and consumers may need more than what was offered in 2023. The government's assurance that the initiative will continue under the Rahmah banner suggests that similar programmes will persist, but we will have to wait for the official details to see what improvements or changes will be made to these popular and much-needed internet plans.
