Creating content for virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) will become much easier for creative artists and developers with a major collaboration between PICO, an extended reality (XR) technology company and the Blender Foundation.

Since 2015, PICO has been manufacturing and selling VR headsets, known for their all-in-one VR solutions that combine hardware and software for an immersive VR experience.

Meanwhile, the Blender Foundation is a non-profit organisation behind "Blender", which is a hugely popular, free and open-source software used by artists and designers globally to create 3D models, animations, visual effects, and more.

Enhancing 3D Creation

PICO stands out as the very first XR platform to officially partner with Blender to improve the 3D creation experience specifically within virtual reality environments.

Both PICO and Blender share a common goal: to transform how 3D content is made and to push for a wider adoption of OpenXR. OpenXR is a free, universal standard that helps all VR/MR headsets and programs work together easily, so creators don't need to build content for each specific device.

"This partnership allows us to not only enhance 3D creation tools, but to foster a community where every artist and developer can bring their unique immersive vision to life and connect with a global audience through OpenXR," Head of Partnerships at PICO XR Jessie Zhang said.

By combining PICO’s deep knowledge in XR hardware and software with Blender’s incredibly powerful and open-source tools, artists and developers can have access to new, cutting-edge tools that move beyond traditional ways of working with a mouse and keyboard.

The creative process is potentially much smoother, more natural, and faster because it lets creators work directly inside the immersive virtual space.

By working hand-in-hand, PICO and the Blender Foundation are actively shaping the future of spatial computing (which merges digital data with the physical world in real time).
