Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Review: So Far The Most Solid Foldable This Year

The latest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is currently the brand's flagship book-style foldable smartphone.

With a premium price from RM 7,799, up till RM 9,899. Galaxy Z Fold7 looks familiar to its predecessor, yet there are some upgrades to it when compared to the Galaxy Z Fold6.

Notably, Galaxy Z Fold7 now has a larger 8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, slimmer 8.9 mm profile, stronger Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, an increased 200 MP main camera, and more Galaxy AI features.

Here's how we spent our time with the Galaxy Z Fold7.

Design

One of the best things the Galaxy Fold7 has over the Fold6 is its lighter and slimmer built, yet now with a bigger screen. All in all, Fold7 feels sturdy and premium.

Now slimmed down to 8.9mm when folded versus 12.1mm thickness on the Galaxy Z Fold6; the Galaxy Z Fold7 actually feels more like a candybar smartphone. It's also just as lightweight and comfortable to hold in our small hands (like mine), comparable to and even more so than regular smartphones. Plus when comparing the phone to other competiting brands, Galaxy Z Fold5 is the slimmest foldable smartphone to date, achieving a 4.2mm thinness.

There's also an obvious change in weight. The Galaxy Z Fold7 is 215g in weight, while the Fold6 is 239g.

Even if Galaxy Z Fold7 has shrunk its size, it is by no means a fragile device. In fact it feels strong and solid when in use. The Galaxy Z Fold7 is made of Grade 4 Titanium Lattice which ensures strong durability, particularly corrosion resistance.

The Galaxy Z Fold7 also has a stronger Armor FlexHinge — an improved and stronger hinge that is. In our experience, the Galaxy Z Fold7 felt smooth and even to open. It also closes with a satisfying snap, as if the screen panel folds in magnetically.

For dust and water proofing, the phone's certified with IP48 rating, protecting it from items larger than 1mm, as well as continuous immersion in water up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. The Fold7 is also encased with an Advanced Armor Aluminum frame.

Screen

Samsung has managed to outdo themselves with a bigger unfolded main screen at 8-inch in size, compared to the Z Fold6's 7.6-inch main screen size. On the Z Fold7 is also a dynamic AMOLED 2x display panel. On Z Fold7's cover screen is Corning® Gorilla® Glass Ceramic 2 protection and Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus® 2 for its main screen.

Visuals and colours look premium as according to Samsung's screen standards. When alongside other foldables and regular candybar smartphones including the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Galaxy S25 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold7 looked just as sharp on its bigger screen. At times, visuals do look overexposed depending on the picture, but overall it maintains radiant and clear pictures.

While the screen makes it a dream to multitask and do slightly heavier documentation work, it's a pity that S Pen support for the Galaxy Z Fold7 is not included at all. As the Galaxy Z Fold7 is not a cheap product, a hybrid device (phone + tablet) such as the Fold7 would still benefit from having stylus support.

Processor

The Galaxy Z Fold7 utilises Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy which offers a boost in NPU, CPU and GPU performance— same as the one in Galaxy S25 Ultra. This CPU is designed to take on advanced AI performance, support for multimodal Gen AI and personalization, as well as voice, text, and image AI prompts.

Demanding games like Zenless Zone Zero worked well on the Galaxy Z Fold7, although framerates were a tad sluggish but nontheless still very smooth, and that the phone had no problem running the games with the highest graphic settings. When gaming at its peak (roughly about 15 minutes into gaming), the phone felt warm to the touch, and not hot. Within such a slim design, it's quite a feat that a slim phone like the Z Fold7 managed to run smoothly without thermal issues.

Battery

Samsung has only fitted the Galaxy Z Fold7 with a 4,400mAh battery which promises about 24 hours worth of video playback. These days, most smartphones hold batteries starting from 5,000mAh onwards, which puts Galaxy Z Fold7 on the lower end. At the same time, Samsung has done older moficiations to their CPUs which affects both performance and battery.

In our experience, the Galaxy Z Fold7 surprisingly has been great in preserving its battery, with 45 minutes of Zenless Zone Zero (half action half idle performances) only using under 7% of battery. When the phone is on idle, a 100% charge would garner about 4 days worth of battery life.

However, this does not include a full-day active use of the phone. For the most parts, we find ourselves using the cover screen for many actions such as browsing social media and taking images. We occasionally opened up to the main 8-inch screen when we're looking to play games and check documents or view calendars.

Thus, the phone should last you at least a day of normal use. But for a phone this price, we did hope to get an even more crazy battery performance.

Camera

On the Galaxy Z Fold7 is an impressive 200MP rear wide sensor camera, with a 12MP ultra wide and 10MP telephoto rear lens capable of up to 30x zoom. Meanwhile the front screen camera is a 10MP lens (cover) and a 10MP under-display camera.

This generation of Galaxy Z Fold also comes with Nightography enhancements, the ability to capture 10-bit HDR video with 4x wider colour gamut range.

In our experience, it is recommended to capture photos with the 200MP lens when the days are brightly-lit with sunlight, as you'll be able to enjoy the best out of the lens, which offers very sharp and clear images up to 5x zoom.

Meanwhile, the 12MP telephoto lens aids with up to 30x zoom, offering fast transitions between lenses to produce portraits with smooth bokeh and clear separation between subject and background, as well as sharp close ups of macro shots or far away landscapes of the cityscape.

Overall, the best attributes of the Galaxy Z Fold7's camera is that it produces images that are pleasantly sharp, with natural yet vibrant colours. But for some reason, under dimmer settings, the camera may produce quite an amount of noise, though this problem becomes subtle when you use Night mode to capture the shots.

Moreover, due to the image interpolation technology that are on Samsung smartphones, images taken via telephoto-zoomed shots are sharp at a glance, but the shots will lack detail when you finger-pinch to check the images up close further.

Moreover, the 30x zoom claim by Samsung isn't as accurately marketed nicely. The phone produces statisfying sharp images up to 20x zoom. But anything beyond that and the details of images become oil painting-like instead.

UI & OS

The Galaxy Z Fold7 comes with One UI 8, which is based on Android 16. As expected, it's a beautiful, clean and snappy UI to work on. Like the rest of the series, Galaxy Z Fold7 will also have 7 years of security and OS updates. Meanwhile, there's isn't much addition to Galaxy AI.

You'll still get to enjoy unique Galaxy Z series editing tools such as Photo Assist, where you can activate side-by-side image editing and view the original as well. Galaxy Z Fold7 is primed with advanced generative editing for complex work Suggest Erase. Not only that, but Audio Eraser—previously reserved for video editing—will also apply to viewing on video player, voice recorder, for Samsung Notes and other transcription actions.

What we liked

Camera (Sharpness)

The Galaxy Z Fold7 sees a nice upgrade of incorporating a 200MP main wide lens that captures sharp and vibrant images, so much so that when using lenses with its 12MP telephoto lens, the results of the images are natural and clear. This is however, dependent on light source of subjects. The brighter the surrounding, the snappier results are.

Screen

When we compared the Galaxy Z Fold7 to older recently-released foldables and modern candy-bar smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold7, although with a bigger screen, produces nice and sharp visuals just as well, if not more vibrant than regular smartphones.

Built & design, especially hinge

We trust Samsung when they said that they designed the Galaxy Z Fold7 with a stronger Armor (and better) FlexHinge. When in Flex Mode, the Galaxy Z Fold7 was the steadiest in maintaining its form, even compared to other similar competitors. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, when unfolding the Galaxy Z Fold7, it felt pleasantly smooth and even to use.

We also need to give it to Samsung for making the several design changes that turned the Galaxy Z Fold7 into one of the most comfortable foldable smartphones to operate. It's lightweight to hold, yet feels solid just like a regular smartphone.

What we disliked

It doesn't lay steadily on surfaces

A small annoyance for anyone who likes using their phones on flat surfaces is that the Galaxy Z Fold7 does not lay down steadily. It wobbles a little too much for our liking, and may be difficult to use for certain scenarios such as playing digital board games or editing images with finger-drawn visuals.

Images lack details

As mentioned in our Camera section; because of the interpolation method that Samsung has employed into their camera and imaging system, the big contrast and leap between megapixels on its three lenses (200MP, 12MP and 10MP) is too big to marry them each other for a more satisfying snap. This is affected more when you take a not-so-well-lit setting on standard mode.

Sometimes, part of the enjoyment in taking zoom shots is to appreciate the details found, especially if they are macro shots. Alas, while the images on Galaxy Z Fold7 look sharp at a glance, pinching images upclose for more details is not possible. If Samsung closes or narrow the gap between the camera megapixels, perhaps we will be able to see grand shots from Samsung once more.

Who is this for?

For the most, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is currently one of our team's favourite foldables, mostly for its solid built quality and great screen this time. Its camera capability is considered average at this point, and battery as well, both aspects reliant on varying user case scenario. Editing documents and images on the bigger screen was also a treat, though that experience will differ if you prefer to lay it flat on the surface, to which was often wobbly and not pleasant for us.

If you are willing to spend, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is a nice balanced, premium foldable book-style smartphone, but is still considered a niche pick. With a RM7,799 price tag, perhaps you can try to get it with any trade-in deals or so.
