Google has started rolling out AI summaries in Discover, the main news feed inside Google's search app.

Before, Discover would gather the links to articles from major publications curated based on your past search history. You click on a link you're interested in and it directs you to that website.

According to 9to5Google, users will now see an AI-generated summary pulled from multiple news publications, with their logos on the top-left corner. Not all news platforms' logos are shown, you'd need to tap to see the rest.

A smaller message warns that these summaries are generated with AI, "which can make mistakes."

The feature is still in the midst of its rollout, some users in the US have begun seeing these AI summaries within the Google app.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that it is an official launch and the feature will appear on iOS and Android with a focus on trending lifestyle topics like sports and entertainment.

Google has tried out other ways of presenting the news displayed in Discover besides the summaries. TechCrunch reported that some stories — though not flagged as generated by AI — will include a set of bullet points below the headline or will be grouped with similar news.

Will People Be Actually Reading News?

While the way we're getting information is more efficient with the new method, it does reduce the chances of someone clicking on a link to get the full context of a story.

Apart from this new feature, Google also introduced AI Mode, an alternative to traditional search that provides answers through an AI chatbot powered by the Gemini model.

This features hasn't been around for that long, and many news sites in the US like the New York Times have already saw noticeable decline in organic web traffic.

A report from digital market intelligence company Similarweb found that since the launch of Google's AI Overview in May 2024, the number of news searches on the web that result in no-click-throughs to news websites has grown from 56% to nearly 69% as of May 2025. Organic traffic also fell, dropping from over 2.3 billion visits at its peak in mid-2024 to fewer than 1.7 billion in mid-2025.

But perhaps this shift won't be a sole, reliable source of information, as AI-generated summaries are prone to making mistakes, which Google has already made clear in its rollout of AI summaries on Google Discover.
