At the Galaxy Unpacked 2025, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold7 measures at 8.9mm when folded and 4.2mm when it's not, making it lighter than most candy bar phones in the market.

Despite the phone's slim body being a major standout, it came at the cost of a pretty popular feature: the stylus S Pen.

The company explained the Galaxy Z Fold7 no longer supported the S Pen due to underwhelming use from users. The lack of S Pen adoption isn't surprising because the stylus is a separate attachment that doesn't come with Samsung's phones like the Z Fold lines or the Ultra phones.

But it isn't goodbye yet, as a Samsung exec revealed that there are plans to bring back the stylus for future foldables.

The S Pen Isn't Gone For Good

According to South Korean outlet ETNews, Samsung MX business division executive director Kang Min-seok shared that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was a product of consumers wanting something "thin and light".

"Please think of it as a ‘trade-off’ where you lose one if you choose one,” he said.

Kang confirmed that any removed or static features were made to chase that ultra-slim 8.9mm chassis, but he emphasised that the company is “pursuing a perfect product balance, not just thinness and lightness.”

He also added that the company is looking into R&D means for new technologies within a future S Pen to make it thinner, and that they would reconsider bringing back the S Pen when "the level of perfection increases and there is consumer demand.”

The Elec reported in December last year that Samsung and another South Korean company, HiDeep, were working on a new type of stylus that would work without a digitiser or a battery. This could mean that the new pen will be similar to Apple Pencil, using a combination of technologies such as onboard pressure sensitivity and tilt detection.

For now, it's not clear what form the new S Pen will take, whether it'll finally be integrated into a foldable, or which devices will be compatible with it. We'll just have to wait and see what Samsung cooks up next.
