YouTube is making a significant change to how it highlights popular content, announcing on Thursday that it's removing its long-standing Trending page and "Trending Now" list. Instead of one big, all-encompassing feed, the platform will now display the most popular content within specific categories on YouTube Charts.
Why the Change?
When the Trending page first launched back in 2015, organising truly viral videos everyone was talking about in a single list was much simpler. However, YouTube explains that the landscape has changed dramatically. Trends are now shaped by countless videos from diverse communities, leading to more "micro-trends" than ever before.
The way people are discovering trending videos and the latest viral craze has changed now. YouTube notes that viewers are no longer relying on a single "Trending" tab to find what's popular. People are discovering trending content through various ways on the platform, such as personalised recommendations, direct searches, and even comments sections. So, YouTube has observed a noticeable decrease in visits to the Trending page, particularly over the last five years.

New Category-Specific Charts
To better align with how content is discovered today, YouTube is moving away from the singular list.
The new category-specific charts will include:
-
Trending Music Videos
-
Weekly Top Podcast Shows
-
Trending Movie Trailers
YouTube has also indicated plans to add even more content categories in the future, tailoring to specific interests.
While the general Trending page is disappearing, YouTube reassures users that personalised recommendations will continue to be a primary way viewers find content they'll love. In a blog post, the company explained, "Along with highlighting popular content in charts, we’ll keep showing viewers the videos that we think they’ll love through personalised recommendations."
For those who prefer to browse non-personalised content, options like the Explore menu, creator channels, and their subscriptions feed will still be available.
