OpenAI is reportedly planning to release its own AI-powered web browser in the coming weeks.

According to TechCrunch, OpenAI has had plans to build a browser to compete with Google Chrome since 2024.

How the AI Browser Is Supposed to Work

The core idea behind this new type of browser is to keep more of your web interactions inside the browser itself, rather than just linking out to external websites. Reuters reports that the browser may integrate Operator, OpenAI’s web-Browse AI agent, as a key feature.

Instead of typing a query and getting a list of links to click, the AI browser could provide direct answers by analysing the information from various websites.

Besides that, the browser could do all the things ChatGPT can such as summarising articles, singling out key details from a write-up, offering relevant information, or suggesting actions based on the page you’re on.

Why Is OpenAI Building This?

The most significant reason for OpenAI to build its own browser is data and control. For years, Google Chrome has been the primary gateway to the internet, giving Google immense control over the user experience and access to valuable data.

By creating its own browser, OpenAI can:

  • Gain direct access to user data: Its AI models can be trained to know how people search for and interact with information online. The more data they have, the better they can make their AI.

  • Create novel user experiences: The browser would give OpenAI the freedom to innovate without being restricted by Google's ecosystem.

  • Establish a new default for search: By putting a conversational AI agent at the centre of the browser, OpenAI could challenge Google's decades-long dominance in web search, making their AI the new starting point for finding information.
