Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 First Impression: With a More Durable Hinge & 200MP Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025 July Edition has finally unveiled the latest Galaxy Z Fold7 - Samsung's next flagship foldable smartphone.

Not surprisingly, the Galaxy Z Fold7 has a premium price from RM 7,799, up till RM 9,899. It seems similar to its predecessor, yet there are some tweaks to this generation compared to the Galaxy Z Fold6. With some hardware upgrades, we're excited to see how the Galaxy Z Fold7 performs in the next coming weeks.

For now, here's what we think about the Galaxy Z Fold7, pre-review.

Design

Upon holding, the Galaxy Z Fold7 feels very light in weight, easily lighter than may other candy-bar phones! This should be a comfortable phone to use in the long run, even for small hands (like mine).

Firm and cool to the touch, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is made of Grade 4 Titanium Lattice which is said to provide strong durability, particularly corrosion resistance. Although not confirmed as the slimmest in its market when folded, Galaxy Z Fold7 is still pretty slim at 8.9mm. It is mentioned the phone is the slimmest among its category at launch when unfolded at 4.2mm.

Samsung has said that the Galaxy Z Fold7 now has a stronger Armor FlexHinge. While it does not feel any different to the Fold6, it does open up with a bit of resistance against my "weak" fingers, and without any hint of flimsiness.

All in all, Fold7 does not look any different. And it felt premium to the touch as always. If you're interested to get the Mint (online exclusive) variant, go for it because it's a beautiful "matte" pastel mint that has a touch of grey to it, so the colour suits both feminine and masculine users.

Screen

The screen is currently tagged as the 'biggest' foldable, with its unfolded main screen at 8-inch in size. This is also a dynamic AMOLED 2x display panel, and protected by Corning Gorilla Victus Glass 2. Visuals and colours look premium as according to Samsung's screen standards.

What was also shared to us is that the screen now has a different and better adhesive to avoid risk of immature screen bubbling - something that has been a concern on most Samsung foldables for awhile.

Here comes something... unpopular. There's no S Pen support at all for the screen. Samsung had said this was due to it being an underutilised feature in previous generations. What we think is, they could've still included this, since the Galaxy Z Fold7 is not a cheap product. And many users do treat the model as a hybrid device (phone + tablet), so stylus support is always a nice addition.

Processor

The Galaxy Z Fold7 utilises Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy which promises a boost in NPU, CPU and GPU performance— same as the one in Galaxy S25 Ultra. In essence, the CPU promises advanced AI performance, support for multimodal Gen AI and personalization, as well as voice, text, and image AI prompts.

Battery

Here's a caveat; the Galaxy Z Fold7 has a 4,400mAh battery that promises 24 hours video playback. This number pales in comparison to many other candybar smartphones now in the market, dominating the scene with batteries starting from 5,000mAh onwards. If Fold7 performs like it is on paper, this is a big dealbreaker for most users. But as such, Samsung does do decent fortifications to its CPU which then affects battery, so we look forward to how well the phone lasts in a day.

Camera

A first for a foldable in the market is Galaxy Z Fold7's 200MP rear wide sensor camera, alongside a 12MP ultra wide and 10MP telephoto rear lens, making it quite an interesting tri-camera setup. Meanwhile the front screen camera is a 10MP lens (cover) and a 10MP under-display camera.

During our time spent trying the phone at a first glance, Samsung says this generation will have new Nightography enhancements, as well as the ability to capture 10-bit HDR video with 4x wider colour gamut range whether in the day or night.

In our upcoming review for this phone, it'll include the likes of productivity, where Samsung has included several new Galaxy AI features mostly for post-production purposes.

Therefore, those who love big screens for work, yet wants a compact device due to its weight, can consider the Galaxy Z Fold7 as a 2-in-1 smartphone and tablet combo at this point. The dealbreaker in viewing the phone this way is that the screen now does not support S Pen. So approach the Galaxy Z Fold7 with this in mind.
