Google is planning to bring its dedicated video editing app, YouTube Create, to iOS devices. This move comes nearly two years after the app first launched exclusively on Android.

Job listings reviewed by TechCrunch reveal that Google is actively hiring engineers in India specifically for this iOS development project.

What is YouTube Create?

YouTube Create is Google's attempt to provide a free mobile video editing solution tailored for content creators. Launched on Android in September 2023 (and expanding to more markets by early 2024), the app was developed after extensive consultation with over 3,000 creators to ensure it met their actual needs.

The app is like Capcut, but for creators who produce both YouTube Shorts and longer-form videos. It offers a range of editing tools, including basic editing, filters and effects, royalty-free music, voiceovers, auto-captions, and even audio cleanup to remove background noise.

When creators are done with their videos, they can export and publish videos directly to their YouTube channel.

It Isn't as Popular as CapCut

Despite Google's massive reach and the app being free, YouTube Create has struggled to gain traction against established players like CapCut (owned by ByteDance, TikTok's parent company).

In a recent quarter, CapCut saw 66 million downloads on Android, while YouTube Create barely made it past 500,000 downloads in the same period. They've only 4 million total since its Android launch in the last two years.

CapCut has been around longer and is almost synonymous with mobile video editing app, especially for short-form content. Capcut also provides seamless editing-to-posting, which makes it really convenient for TikTok creators. YouTube Create, while designed for YouTube, perhaps hasn't quite stuck with the general public yet.
