YouTube is rolling out its experimental conversational AI tool to a wider audience in the US, moving beyond just Premium members. This means more people will soon see an "Ask" button with a Gemini logo on their YouTube app, ready to help them interact with content in a whole new way.
A Chatbot in YouTube App
This AI tool was previously rolled out to Premium subscribers in the US. On the YouTube app, there will be an "Ask" button with a Gemini logo.
By pressing the Ask button, you can ask the AI questions about the video content and even ask it to summarise the contents of the video. The AI will provide answers drawn from the video content and the wider web.
If you don't know what to watch next, the AI can suggest related content to you based on your interests. For academic or educational videos, this feature can even quiz you on key concepts, helping you test your understanding and master new subjects.

A Carousel Of Related Content
Beyond the in-video chatbot, YouTube is also enhancing how you discover content with a new AI-powered search results carousel. When you search for things like travel destinations, shopping items, or local activities, this AI carousel will pop up, suggesting videos and topic descriptions from various creators.
For example, if you search for "best beaches in Asia", the AI might generate a carousel highlighting clips from videos showcasing top snorkelling spots or pristine white beaches. These clips come with brief descriptions and links to more videos so you can research for your trip itinerary. For now, this search carousel is being tested with Premium members in the US for specific categories like shopping and travel.
I'm Confused
These new AI features may be able to boost discoverability and recommend related videos, there's a big chance that AI summaries can affect viewership for creators if users don't have to watch the full video to get their information.
And AI is supposed to make our lives easier but what's so difficult about watching videos? Hopefully, we don't become too reliant to this AI summary feature because the point of watching videos is to critically evaluate its information and gaining knowledge from it.
