Grab Malaysia has officially launched its first dedicated fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) for airport rides from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 to KL Sentral.

This initiative, which aligns with the Transport Ministry's objectives, aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions and encourage EV adoption acorss the country.

You Can Book The Service On Grab

After you make the booking, the BYD M6, a 7-seater electric MPV, comes to pick you up from the airport. The pick-up point for these EV rides is located at Door 4, Level 3 (the main arrival hall), differentiating it from the standard ride-hailing pick-up on Level 1.

With a foldable third row of seats, there is ample space for larger luggages. There is even a dedicated EV Lounge at the KLIA terminal, so travellers can wait comfortably for their ride to arrive.

Currently, the initial fleet consists of 10 BYD M6 vehicles.

How Much Does A Ride Cost?

While the environmental benefits are clear, the new EV ride option comes at a slightly higher price point. For instance, a check indicates that a journey from KLIA Terminal 1 to KL Sentral via the EV 6-seater costs approximately RM134, compared to RM105 for a standard 6-seater Grab ride.

The higher cost may deter some passengers, especially if the perceived benefits (quieter ride, eco-friendliness) don't outweigh the additional expense for budget-conscious travellers. Currently, the KLIA Ekspres train can transport travellers from KL Sentral to both KLIA Terminal 1 and 2, with a one-way adult fare costing RM55.

Currently, there has been no announcement regarding the expansion of this eco-friendly ride option to KLIA Terminal 2 or Subang Airport. Such an expansion will likely depend on the success of this initial launch at KLIA Terminal 1. Nonetheless, there is a growing segment of travellers who are willing to pay a premium for environmentally friendly transportation choices, and ultimately, that's a win for the environment.
