Soon, Google's Veo 3 will be built directly into YouTube Shorts, allowing creators to generate elaborate, polished video clips using just a simple text prompt.
This integration was announced by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan at the Cannes Lions film festival on Wednesday, 18 June, and is expected to go live in the coming weeks. While YouTube already uses an earlier version of Veo for Dream Screen, Veo 3 generates more detailed and realistic AI-generated videos.
Here's a look at Dream Screen:
What Veo 3 Means for Creators
Creators will be able to generate custom clips for transitions, backgrounds, or visual gags in seconds using just a text prompt. This eliminates the need for stock footage or complex animation, allowing them to produce high-quality visuals, special effects, or scenes in exotic locations that were previously out of reach due to budget or equipment limitations.
Furthermore, Veo 3 opens up new storytelling avenues for creators to instantly visualise complex ideas, fictional narratives, or abstract art within the bite-sized Shorts format, as YouTube CEO Neal Mohan believes this "cutting-edge AI technology will push the limits of human creativity."

What About Non-AI Creators and Deepfakes?
If everyone can create content, then what happens to other creators? If polished video content can be easily generated from text, it could potentially devalue traditional filming and editing skills, making it harder for non-AI-generated content to stand out.
There's also the pressing issue of the authenticity crisis, as powerful AI like Veo 3 could be misused to create realistic deepfakes of celebrities or alter real footage, which is already a worrying issue. To address this, YouTube has partnered up with agencies like CAA (Creative Artists Agency) and top creators to develop tools that give high-profile individuals autonomy over their likeness on the platform.
Perhaps with Google's SynthID, it'll be much easier to identify AI-generated content. There needs to be policies to address if those content is used for harmful purposes.
