In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, Malaysia is emerging as a fascinating case study. According to the latest Ipsos AI Monitor 2025 survey, Malaysia ranks as one of the most AI-excited countries globally, securing the third spot among 30 nations surveyed. However, this widespread enthusiasm comes with a significant undercurrent of apprehension, placing Malaysians simultaneously among the most nervous about AI's implications.

The "Wonder and Worry" of AI

The Ipsos survey, which polled 23,216 adults worldwide, reveals that 77% of Malaysians express enthusiasm towards artificial intelligence, in particular in its potential to boost the economy and deployment in products and services — a sentiment shared by other highly excited nations like Thailand and Indonesia.

Yet, beneath this wave of optimism lies a noticeable sense of unease. The survey indicates that 55% of Malaysians feel nervous about AI, a figure slightly higher than the global average of 53%. This mix of feelings perfectly captures what Ipsos calls the "wonder and worry of AI" where people are both hopeful and slightly anxious about artificial intelligence.

"For years, in the Ipsos Global AI monitor, we have seen a similar tension related to this specific set of technologies: people are excited about the advances in artificial intelligence, but they are also nervous about the changes those advances could bring," Ipsos senior vice-president Matt Carmichael was quoted saying in The Edge.

Despite The Unease, Malaysians Are Actively Incorporate AI Into Their Lives

A recent Microsoft and LinkedIn 2024 Work Trend Index Report reveals that a staggering 84% of Malaysian knowledge workers are already incorporating AI into their work, significantly surpassing the global average of 75%.

Even with this high adoption rate, there isn't a coherent, organisation-wide AI strategy in place. The report found as much as 83% of Malaysian employees are bringing and utilising their own AI tools to work.

The Malaysian government has openly embraced AI as a core component of the country’s national development. The public shares this eagerness to adopt AI's potential with open arms, even as they simultaneously grapple with its inherent uncertainties.
