For many of us, our smartphones and tablets are central to our daily lives, connecting us to friends, family, and endless entertainment. Among the most used apps are WhatsApp for messaging and YouTube for videos.
This week, both YouTube and WhatsApp have updated their support requirements. If you're holding onto an older iPhone or Android device, you might soon find these apps no longer working as they used to.
YouTube Says Goodbye to Some Older Apple Devices
If you're an Apple enthusiast with an older iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you might notice your YouTube app stopping working. The issue primarily affects devices that cannot upgrade beyond iOS 15 or iPadOS 15. This includes models such as:
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone SE (1st generation)
- iPad Air 2
- iPad mini 4
- iPod touch (7th generation)
Essentially, if your device can't run the latest iOS/iPadOS versions, the YouTube app will no longer function. Unfortunately, Apple typically doesn't release updates to keep older models compatible with new app requirements, so upgrading to a newer device might be the long-term solution for dedicated YouTube fans.
But, if you're not interested in a phone upgrade, you can still access YouTube via your device's web browser (like Safari or Chrome). The web experience may not be as smooth or "polished" as the dedicated app, but you'll still be able to watch your favourite videos. It'll just require a few extra taps before you can enjoy your video.
WhatsApp's Latest Device Cut-Off
The messaging service has also officially dropped support for another wave of older iPhone and Android phones, effective from 1 June.
As of June 1, the following models are among those no longer supported by WhatsApp:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- Galaxy S III
- HTC One X
- Sony Xperia Z
Before WhatsApp discontinues support for a particular operating system, users will receive multiple notifications within the app, reminding them to upgrade their device's software.
