For decades, Google Search has been our go-to for finding information online. We type in keywords, and Google delivers a list of links, images, and videos. A research conducted by Google revealed that people are increasingly using AI for things like "how-to" guides, exploratory advice, and even local shopping assistance.

So with that in mind, Google is officially rolling out AI Mode in Search after speculations that it might be replacing its "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.

What is AI Mode and How Does It Work?

Announced recently at Google I/O 2025, AI Mode is a completely redesigned way to interact with Google Search. If you're in the U.S. (with a rollout to other regions expected later), you'll soon see a new AI Mode tab in Search and a shortcut right in the Google app's search bar.

You can get immediate answers without needing to sift through multiple links. AI Mode will piece together all the relevant information from various sources to answer complex, multi-part questions that used to require several separate searches. Plus, the AI feature will highlight key details and provide handy links if you want to read further.

Want to know more after the initial answer? You can simply ask follow-up questions, keeping the conversation going and picking up right where you left off, without needing reprompt it with context.

From AI Overviews to "AI Mode": The Journey

This new AI Mode didn't just appear out of nowhere. It evolved from a feature many of us have already seen: AI Overviews. These are the AI-generated summaries that sometimes pop up at the top of your search results when Google thinks a direct answer would be helpful.

Google's research showed that people really valued these AI Overviews but wanted them to be more predictable. Users were also naturally starting to ask longer, more complex questions – the exact kind of questions AI is brilliant at handling.
