With the Nintendo Switch 2 slated for release on 5 June, a lot gamers and users are eagerly waiting for new announcement and updates about their favourite games. However, a strange update to the official "Nintendo Today" (mobile app that brings daily updates from Nintendo) has left many scratching their heads and unable to record their screens.

"Nintendo Today": A Hub for Fans, Now with a Catch

The free "Nintendo Today" mobile app was launched as a direct pipeline for Nintendo to share exclusive news and unique content with its biggest fans, letting users customise notifications for their favourite Switch games and activities. It's meant to be a go-to source for all things Switch 2.

However, a very recent update to this app has caused some disappointment. Users are now finding themselves unable to record promotional videos directly from the app. When they try to capture the screen, they're met with a black screen.

Nintendo users first caught this measure a couple days ago after one Reddit user shared that they were unable to record content on the app using a Xiaomi 15 Ultra, resulting in a black screen. However, surprisingly, an older device seemed to work fine for one user, though the reason is unclear. Other users on various Android phones (like a Galaxy S23) and even iPhones have reported similar issues, with some specifically noting that only video recording is blocked, while screenshots might still work.

This is causing a bit of a stir among the community, as many were hoping to easily save and share these official materials. Ultimately, the exact reason for this remains unclear. It could be an intentional update by Nintendo to tightly control how its official promotional materials (especially those related to the highly-anticipated Switch 2) are shared. Or, it could simply be an unintended bug in the app's coding.

Not the First Time Nintendo's Raising Eyebrows

This isn't the only recent Nintendo announcement that's left some fans feeling a bit puzzled. Just earlier this month, it was confirmed that gameplay clips recorded directly from the Nintendo Switch 2 would still be limited to a mere 30 seconds for those without a separate capture card exactly the same restriction found on the original Switch. For modern gaming, where quick sharing of cool moments is key, this feels a bit outdated.

On top of that, Nintendo also revealed that to use the Switch 2's "GameChat" feature, users will need to register a phone number. These moves, combined with the new app restriction, could mean Nintendo is taking a stricter approach to how its content and console features are used and shared.
