Remember those sci-fi movies where people held holographic meetings?
Google just unveiled something not too dissimilar from that: a video communication platform that make remote conversations feel as though you're in the same room.
Like A Face-To-Face Call

Google describes Beam as an "AI-first" video communication platform aiming for "true-to-life human connection".
Project Starline, introduced in 2021, showcased a "light field display" designed to render individuals in 3D without special eyewear. The core idea is to move beyond the flat, 2D experience of traditional video calls.
By accurately capturing nuances like facial expressions, direct eye contact, and subtle body language, Google Beam seeks to make virtual conversations feel more engaging.
"This is what allows you to make eye contact, read subtle cues and build understanding and trust as if you were face-to-face," according to Google.

Instant Translations During Calls
Beyond this, Google has also announced that some of Beam's powerful capabilities, specifically real-time speech translation, are making their way to Google Meet.
This feature gives you quick translations that sound natural, keeping the original speaker's tone and feelings, making conversations across languages much smoother. This real-time translation is currently available in beta for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, with initial language support for English and Spanish.
