Forget clunky VR headsets — Google is taking Extended Reality (XR) directly to our faces, and this time, they're doing it with some swagger and style.
When Tech Meets Fashion

At Google I/O 2025, Google announced a cool collaboration with South Korean eyewear trendsetter Gentle Monster for their new AI Smart Eyewear powered by Android XR.
Android XR is Google's latest Android platform, made specifically for smart glasses and headsets, and it's built with their advanced Gemini AI.
Instead of just a wearable screen, this smart eyewear becomes a stylish fashion item you can put on for your everyday routine. It works with your Android phone, providing access to your apps, while keeping your hands-free.
Beyond Just Mere Notifications On The Screen
These glasses themselves are equipped with a camera, microphones, and speakers, powered by their ability to "see and hear what you do" and leverage Gemini's intelligence.
An optional in-lens display privately shows you helpful and relevant information directly in your field of vision.
The sneak peek at Google I/O 2025 showcased Android XR glasses in various real-world scenarios. Examples included messaging friends, scheduling appointments, receiving turn-by-turn directions, and capturing photos — all without needing to physically use your smartphone.
The most interesting was a live language translation between two individuals, where the glasses could detect different languages and effectively provide "subtitles for the real world".
"Unlike Clark Kent, you can get superpowers when you put your glasses on," Shahram Izadi from Google XR joked.
