WhatsApp, the globally utilized messaging platform owned by Meta, is reportedly experimenting with using AI to facilitate the generation of profile pictures and group icons. This development, currently undergoing testing with select users, introduces the capability to create bespoke visual identifiers directly within the application using text-based prompts.

AI-Generating Profile Pictures

The feature allows users to generate images by inputting specific textual descriptions or prompts that outline the desired visual characteristics for their profile pictures. Instead of uploading an existing photograph, this specific application requires the user to provide setup photographs, which are then processed by Meta AI, in conjunction with a textual prompt, to create an AI-generated image for user representation.

To access this AI feature, head to the application settings and select the "Create AI Image" option. This interface allows for the input of a descriptive prompt, subsequently processed by Meta AI to produce a corresponding visual representation.

For group icons, the process involves accessing the group information page, selecting the "Change group icon" option, and entering a description of the intended theme or concept. Meta AI then generates a tailored image based on this description, serving as the group's visual identifier.

Currently, this feature is exclusively available to users participating in the iOS beta programme who are using the most recent iteration of the WhatsApp application (iOS 25.16.10.70). Furthermore, the Meta AI service currently supports prompts entered in a limited set of languages, including English, Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese.
